- Dacs connection speed?
- Posted by Mike on August 10th, 2005
Is it right that a dacs line will not support dial up above 33.6 kbps?
BT have informed my isp that there is a delay to me getting broadband due
to my line having a dacs but I get between 48 and 52 kbps. 250 metres of
copper to microwave link and then less than 2 miles of microwave link
directly to the exchange. BT promised that a manager would phone me within
48 hrs to give full details of any problem but failed to do so.
After reading to BT's 'come back to us' letter I had signed up with another
isp for adsl and given 30 days notice to NTL for their freedom service so as
to let my telephone calls revert to going back through BT.
Fortunately NTL allowed me to drop the cancellation.
Should have known better as due to bad service I had swapped from BTinternet
to NTL with unofficial advice from a lady at a BTinternet call centre a good
few years back. She certainly gave good advice as they have given me
excellent service and my only gripe is the 0870 number for customer service
though I have never had to get any technical advice from them. In fact I
only ever used it the last couple of weeks to first cancel and then drop the
cancellation.
Must give full marks to Raymond Haydock of BT Customer Contact Centre
though. His said I must phone 0800 800 060 (option 1 2 1) where a advisor
would assist. It was for change of bl***dy address. Suppose he must have
meant move somewhere else and try!

You are not on a dacs if you get between 48 and 52 kbps

Yes. IIRC, the additional A/D - D/A conversions prevent V.90 working at
any speed.

I cannot help but think there may be a connection... Why BT would claim a
DACS if it seems quite unlikely (from the speed you've reported) is anyone's
business... Is there a chance the ISP has some other reason for not providing
service (as for another poster, where TescoNTL cannot supply ADSL at present
as it requires NTL to organise capacity from that exchange...)
Which ISP has passed on the bad news ? Would probably be worth escalating it
to get them to double check, since they should be able to confim that with the
current modem speeds you are not on a DACS line. Good luck. Peter M.

Thanks lads -that confirmed I will write to my isp and seems like another
letter to Ian Carmichael is in order - any other advice - we knew this was
likely to happen and tried to get BT to look in to it about a year ago but
they said to wait until the exchange was activated (27th July), nothing
could be done until then. BT will ignore us as we are only a very small
community. - Mike

The isp I signed up with is force9 but another neighbour signed up with BT
Yahoo and the BT engineer assigned to the job for him
just cancelled it saying that there was an optical cable (all copper on the
island) and he couldn't do it.

Ah, perhaps saw that post the other day ! Might be an idea to post in the
Plus.Net forum on www.ADSLguide.org (as Force9 is from of the Plus.Net ISP
'family' to see if Dave Tomlinson or one of the other helpful staff can do
a bit more about getting a firm answer out of BT for your exchange - since
it is clearly something you and others want a definitive answer on; 'fibs'
from BT Wholesale about why they're ready to cancel orders are bad, and
certainly the ISP should be able to escalate it to get a firm response
about what service is (or perhaps *will be*) available for you all...

Possibly that it has come back as 'incompatible equipment' (ie the
microwave link) but someone has passed that on as being a DACS because
'incompatible equipment' always has been a DACS before ?
Unless you can get a DSLAM physically on the island with copper plugged
into it you have no hope, you may have to resort to politicians as it is
their promise that is not being delivered. You have LD up there don't
you ? should work or you might get a free bridge instead <g>

OK perhaps that is pushing it for an Ork, but having an island where it
does not work is hardly in the spirit of it. Hence a bit of judicious
ear bending might just work.

Seems like when the Highland & Island Enterprise checked with BT prior to
the rollout and queried the position for 4 of the smaller isles, they were
informed by BT that there were no issues with the supply to them. For the
last 2 weeks BT, BT Broadband and BT Wholesale have played pass the parcel
with our problem. Promises of a manager calling within 48 hours and then
being unable to speak to a manager at any time. Nearly got one this morning,
the young lady said I have go you a manager, just putting you through and
then the line went dead. The H & I Enterprise are making enquiries now along
with interest from our MP so we may be lucky. If not then we may be ok for a
grant for a wireless link through the social inclusion grant monies.

I had a similar problem with Raymond Haydock and when I complained h
became sarcastic and aggressive. Where do BT get these people from?

Actually I had some dialogue with the guy who runs diybanter when we were
getting lots of out of thread posts from there and he was very helpful in
fixing it. So as you say, there are good people. I wonder if its the same
chap doing broadband?.
