Demon E-mail Addresses
Posted by Gelf on November 20th, 2004

Just got my Home 500 ADSL account activated (7 days, start to
finish!), but not too happy with the format of the e-mail addresses.
It seems that Demon e-mail addresses have to be "user name @ host
name.demon.co.uk".
This makes for a very clunky e-mail address, whereas with Clara, you
could have "host name @ clara.co.uk" or like the Demon version above.
OK, I know you only get one address if you have "host name @
clara.co.uk", but that's all I need, as others in the house have web
mail accounts.
Is there any alternative, eg some kind of 3rd part e-mail, free or
very low cost that is POP3 or can divert itsself into my Demon
mailbox?
TIA
Gelf

AFAIK, Demon have always had that format for mail address, though they
have also supplied SMTP to the customer in the past, and thus someone
might have their own domain xyzzy.co.uk and have mail forwarded to the
Demon a/c xyzzy.demon.co.uk and have it all end up on their own server
with "To" addresses of someone@xyzzy.co.uk (sheesh, I would expect the
domain to have been used :-)

Why not register a .co.uk domain for under a tenner for 2 years and be
able to forward to your Demon mail account, or perhaps switch DNS to a
hosting firm and have MX records pointing to your Demon connection (if
you have a fixed IP). Peter M.

you could use google mail (gmail) or the like and have it forward to

(.co.uk) and redirect the email to your Demon account, the advantage of
this is that you can redirect to whatever ISP you choose regardless of
who you decide to change to in the future.

Domain names cost very little, just get one pointed at your account.

already have one, and it looks as if using the new forwarding feature
of that to POP3 will be the best bet, though I will look at the domain
name option too.
Interestingly I can still pick up my Clara POP mail whilst connected
with Demon, but cannot send.
I am still keeping the Clara account going on a pay as you go basis (I
guess I was a customer for a long time), so it will be interesting to
see if the web space remains (no space with Home500!)

It is very common to b able to collect POP mail from a multitude of ISP
accounts (I still have mailboxes with a few, from past PAYG accounts).

What is uncommon (indeed, a problem) would be for any ISP to allow mail
to be sent out via their service without you using their service. The
main difference between 'standard' POP and SMTP is that POP has username
and password, and SMTP requires none... ISPs usually restrict by IP so
they know anyone on their network is allowed to send. In the case of a
few services, such as Claranet, they offer paid-for accounts which use
authentication to check you are allowed to send mail via their server.

Some other schemes use POP collection prior to SMTP to open a time window
during which a valid POP user can send through the SMTP service. Not sure
which ISPs (if any) offer this now. A few services, such as Yahoo.co.uk
offer SMTP sending for free, while others have annual or one-off fees for
an account on their service. The typical setup for most users is to be
able receive from lots of POP mailboxes and simply send via their ISP's
own SMTP server. Anyone with more than one connection, or who takes a
laptop and uses different ISPs at home, office, o visiting clients, is
likely to make use of an SMTP service independent of all of the ISPs in
regular use (and if they've any sense, will have a reserve service too).

For completeness, it's worth noting that some ISPs allow you to send use
SMTP using authentication. This is enshrined in a standard SMTP
extension, and such SMTP servers usually allow you to post from
