- Are Demon right about 2mb?

Exactly. A lot of ISP's seem to be playing games with this mythical
"upgrade" of the DSLAM's. Methinks they are playing on the fact that
most people don't know any better to show themselves in a better
light.
What they've told the OP of this thread sounds like a load of bollocks
- his line cannot support 2Mb so therefore they'll initiate him at
512kbit and then in Sept (or other autumnal month) they'll speed him
up to 2Mb as then BT will make every line a minimum of 2Mb. What a
load of rubbish - if it's not capable now, it won't be then.
The most sensible thing Demon could have done would be to put his line
through at 1Mb right away. Instead they're putting him through at
512kbit and making him wait until the autumn for the bulk regrader to
wander past and speed him up to speed he could, and should, have
anyway. Unfortunately for the OP I suspect if he had gone with an ISP
with a bit of nouse, he'd probably already be on his maximum speed.
As an ISP Demon seems to be solid and reliable but not that bright....

You are right, but the line length / attenuation / SNR will really
determine the ADSL speed any customer can receive from a 2Mbps
synchronised DSLAM. Just like the handshaking on a modem dial in. As I
understand it most DSLAMs can support up to 8Mbps, and standard routers,
etc, can synchronise up to this as well.
I think you have squarely hit the nail on the head.

I think you're right - it extends the minimum term or adds a new one

Needing 5 disconnects in 2 hours is a bit of a joke.
Still I am glad they are not sticking to the 43db rule - I now have 2meg
@ 50db and have seen posts from people with 56db and stable 2meg
connections.

It says I can get 2M but further tests will be carried out if I order.
It does seem that that's what they go by, I've seen posts from people
who didn't get upgraded from 512 (presumably because of what that says
for them) and they clearly have attenuation/noise way better than me and
have had to chase Pipex/BT to upgrade.

Me too.
I recently got the automatic upgrade via PN.
According to my SAR715 the line is @55.5db but it's working fine at 2meg.
Not seen any problems.
Although I've just had a look and in approximately 5 million packets Rx & Tx
I've had 100 Rx bad packets & 65,000 TX bad packets.
That Tx figure looks a bit high, over 1%.
I'd hate to go down to 1meg.

Well if it works it's OK :-)
Your Rx loss count is better than mine, I don't get Tx loss stats.
Maybe dropping to 1meg wouldn't fix Tx anyway as you sync at 288kbps
either way. I am not sure if you being at 2 rather than 1 will cause
more upstream errors.
It could be that because everyone else on your exchange has been
upgraded, there is now more noise - assuming you didn't get that amount
of loss before the exchange "upgrade" anyway.

I reset the SAR715 yesterday to clear the stats.
I've since had 400,000 packets Rx & Tx.
3 bad Rx and no bad Tx packets.
Looks more like I'd expect.
I'll keep an eye on it.
