DG834GV2 Firmware update and maybe Problem ?
Posted by Mike on October 30th, 2005

I have been using version 2.10.09 for a long long time, and never had any
issues.

I have updated to the new firmware V 3.01.25 version, and have noticed one
problem intermittantly.

The DNS to IP name resolution stops working over the LAN.

Ie, I cant access any web pages using DNS names from any PC/laptop

TCP/IP programs like torrents, and uploads/downloads work fine.

Only way the DNS gets resolved is to reboot the router.

Anyone else having any isseues, or possible cures?

Thanks

Mike

Mike

I have exactly the same problem!

I couldnt access any webpages either. I then went back to Version 2
firmware - and still I had the same problem. I had to un-check the
Auto-Assign DNS server and manually put in the DNS server IP addresses ( I
am with Bulldog). And it's all working again now- finally. I never had a
problem with 2.10.09 either, so Im gonna stay with that now. Wish I hadnt
messed with it now, lol

Kam.

Bulldog have been having DNS server problems today - so your problems may
not have been with the new firmware...

: No problems here on demon, been connected 39 hours.

Or, so far, on Wanadoo,,,,,50 hours.

Can anyone tel me which is the best version of firmware of the following:- ?

v2.10.09
v2.10.17

Does any support the loopback interface? like version 3 does

Depends - there is no one best for eveyone..

If you have LLU/ADSL2/ADSL2+ the answer will be different - also if you just
have "standard" ADSL your DSLAM at your exchange could be from one of
several companies and have a different code on it from some other DSLAM's
etc within BT's network etc..

Its also worth considering v1.05 and others like v2.10.10 which are not on
the Netgear website but can be found at
http://www.longview.eclipse.co.uk/netgear/

No.

it works fine for me!

However, I do not believe any firmware prior to v3 supports loopback.
This thread:

does have a work around, it may not be suitable.

AIUI from my varied experience with the DG834/G, I have found that if you
have a stable version, leave it alone. Sometimes there are many factors
involved, ISP, exchange facilities, the connection speed. I tried version
3.01.25 and its been causing lots of issues here. I have now gone back to
2.10.22 that I was running previously which was very very stable indeed. I
think that sometimes new firmware doesn't happily settle in to old hardware
either. Just my experience on the matter. I think the rule to stick to is,
If it works fine, leave it alone and don't mess. You might just regret the
day you upgraded that 834.

Sorry I forgot to add and important point, that I have found to be correct.
Its advisable to wipe out all your previous setting before perfoming the
upgrade, as I have found on more than one occasion that leaving settings in
there can seriously affect the reliability of the upgrade. I know it sounds
silly, but it works here.

Thanks guys for your replies.

Before i downgrade back to version i have tried something.

De-powered it
I have done a Master reset to the router.
De-powered it
re: powered it, and reflashed with the v3 software.

OK, so its took a bit of faffing to set firewall stuff back up, but since
then it has been running 4 hours with no DNS disconnects.

I will let you know if it still behaving itself in the near future.

thanks

1.04.04
1.05

2.10.09

2.10.22
3.01.25

I've never had any problems of any kind. I guess it just goes to show
that different people have different experiences. I have also looked
after 3-4 other DG834G's in that time and none have experienced
problems with firmware upgrades.

As promised the results. 26 Hours to date with no DNS disconnects. Did the
trick. Would have done it much much sooner than this if there was still a
problem. (V3.01.25 Firmware)

Just done the upgrade, my first time from 1.05 to 3.01.25

Seems OK so far, only did it because I wanted the loopback function now my
sone may be able to play/host one of his online games.

Simon:

1.04.04
1.05
long gap
2.10.09
2.10.16
2.10.22
3.01.25

Eight times LOL !
Thankfully my Netgear failed, so returned it and bought Draytek, in 2 and
half years I upgraded the firmware ONCE and that was to take advantage of
added function: two separate VoIP registrars.
How does Netgear get away with such crappy firmware ?

Why do you keep posting such ridiculous statements is more the question????

OK - so Netgear keep adding *FEATURES* - at a small fraction of the price
of your Draytek!! I know which I would buy.
