DNS failures?
Posted by Joe Soap on July 23rd, 2006

I seem to be suffering spasmodic DNS failures, for the last couple of hours
[Southampton/Portsmouth area].

Anybody else having DNS problems?

I live in that area, but I may have a different ISP to you, and different
DNS servers - I've not had a problem resolving sites from here.

How on earth are you going to get any help if you can't identify the DNS
servers you are having trouble with?

I initially responded because I live near you and I am not having any
DNS related problems - but then I doubt very much we are using the same
servers.

This is a question for your ISP to answer as it is, I expect, their
DNS servers that you are using.

It is nothing to do with where you live.

Check it out yourself, there are many "ping" utilities

stats over a period of time.
Just plug in the IP address of your DNS server.
Often the DNS server is your local router in which
case your BB connection may be playing up.
In any event, ping and traceroute utilities will show
up what's gone pear shaped.

I have to speak to such people all the time; the worst thing is they think
I'm stupid, just because I'm not British...
Quite annoying sometimes...

I tried many DNS servers, including some in USA and Canada. I was wondering
if it was a global problem. I wanted to know if it wwas just me, or more
general. Your response was not helpful at all.

No, I didn't. I wanted answers to a specific question. You didn't answer
anything, just made erroneous comments.

You don't appear to understand DNS or how networks work, do you.
As you think you do, I am sure you'll sort it out.
Im sure you would have checked that it's not a proxy issue on a crappy ISP
(like a cable company).
Im sure you would have called a page just by using it's IP address like
http://212.58.224.125/

You really need to do some reading on the subject to spare yourself looking a
little stupid.
Then again the sock 'me@privacy.net' comes back to a troll anyway.

Actually the question was fine - and yes there were people all over the

to you - there is no doubt about it.
