Does the Sky Wireless Router have a 4 port switch?
Posted by mickr@orange.net on March 13th, 2007

Hope you can help
I'm just about to migrate from BT to Sky/Easynet but need a
combination of WiFi and Ethernet connections.

Does the current supplied Sky Wireless Router (Netgear I think) have
any other ethernet connectivity, eg a 4 port switch so that I can have
hard wired connections as well as WiFi?

Thanks

Yes it has wifi and 4 ethernet ports. Both work equally well.

to the best of my knowledge it is a Netgear DG834GT using custom firmware.
the router can, however, be flashed back to original firmware to access full
router options + open for other networks (i use sky router on pipex.

Have you got this router? Did you flash it back to a regular 834GT?
I'm looking for a 4 port wireless modem/router and I could get one from a
family member who has a failed Sky install (7 weeks and counting). The price
paid seems lower than my regular online shops, but I guess it'd have no
warranty unless flashed back to Sky firmware.

Sky could ask for it back.

yes, i have the router. (ebay £8. bargain!!)
yes i did flash back to netgear firmware.
i have never had sky broadband!
router works A1. better than my dlink 604t
the supplied disk contains (so i am told) the sky firmware, so it can be
flashed back

£40 was paid for 'activiation' which includes a 'FREE' DG834GT.
As these units seem (on average) about £22 on eBay, it's probably sensible
to just send the Sky unit back and cancel the whole deal.

Is there "small print" to say it is on loan (I'm not a Sky customer, so
reference to web pages may not be open for outsiders to read, so quotes
from any T+C would be appreciated - either way - in answering). TIA.

Its not on loan but as sky has only launched a couple of months ago and
there is a 12 month contract its a bit suspicious when someone has a sky
router spare.

If they are still paying (even if free) the monthly subs then its probably
safe.
If they have just decided to cancel sky then there may be a case to say they
have "stolen" the modem as they are in breach of contract.
I doubt if sky will care unless it happens a lot.. then I wouldn't want to
be the test case.
