- Download speeds with 2Mbit connection ?
- Posted by Anorak on November 18th, 2005
I have just gone from 1Mb to 2Mb (yes big deal adsl 2 not on my exchange
yet!) I had thought I would get exactly or near enough twice the download
speed ie 118k on 1Mb now 210k on 2Mb, is this about right or should it be
close to 235 - 240 ?
Even the www.itvlocal.tv site only gives me back just over 1200k speed and
streams at 1166k. What does anyone else get with their 2Mb connection ?

239kb/s at the moment. It will vary with ISP, exchange congestion, how busy
the speed testing website is, and even the internet itself has off days.
Some virus scanners might slow things down a bit depending on your system
and options set in the AV program. MTU might be worth adjusting in some
cases, mine works best on MTU=1430 by a few kb/s.

Gave me 1251, on a 2000 kbps connection. I used 'settings' 'retest' a
few times but that was the highest speed it managed [I chose Brighton link]
FWIW, I can fill the connection with streaming webcams from elsewhere, and
view films etc from CinemaNow.com so know the connection is capable. It may
be that they have chosen to limit to 1200 for now... Peter M. N Wales.

Unsuitable for heavy downloaders, but fine for video/audio streaming.

It will vary with source. Bear in mind that your d/l speed depends on
the u/l speed of the source, how many other users are sharing that
upload pipe, and how much traffic there is between you and it. I tend
to get ~220-240K/s.

But note that this advice is not always relevant if you're using
ethernet and/or a router. YMMV.
