DSL-504 firmware update fails
Posted by Andreas Schulze-Bäing on August 19th, 2004

Hi,

i'm about to update the firmware of my DSL-504 router. I already found
the webpage http://shadow.sentry.org/~trev/dsl50x.html giving some
background information about all the different firmware versions. My
hardware version is a DSL-504 Generation-II, bought and used in the UK.
The current firmware is R2.21.002.06.b2t10uk and I experience what the
page above describes as "paranoid", meaning that it blocks certain
webpages after some time assuming that they are attacking the system.
Furthermore the MSN Messenger sometimes crashes.

As this is very annoying I thought about updating the firmware to
resolve these issues. I tried to update to the current official version
R2.21.002.06.b17uk using the firmware upgrade utility. I disabled my
firewall and the virus scanner before. After starting the utility, the
router is found. After starting the update the following message
appears:

"Transmitting firmware. It will take several seconds. Please wait."

By the way this seems to be the same window being displayed when doing a
backup, which i tried before.

Now I waited for about 24 hourse, but the window simply didn't finish.
And the window that is displayed in the "How to" tutorial on the website
above saying

"Warning! Updating flash now! Do not turn off your device! Please
wait..."

did not appear at all.

I had the same problems when trying to update to R2.21.002.06.b12uk
instead. There i get the same window with the same message "transmitting
firmware". And an update via the web interface with the 14uk xdsl file
did not work as well.

Does anyone have any idea how i could resolve this and update my
DSL-504?

Any help and ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Andreas

Could you get the firmware file (probably somewhere in the utility's
installation directory) and use the web interface to update the firmware?

Yes, i tried that. But it didn't work saying it is not the right file
version. I already got the advice to use the serial connection using
Xmodem - so i'll try that next.

I take it the zip file you have is the same as this one on D-Link's FTP
site?

ftp://ftp.dlink.co.uk/dsl_routers_mo..._rev_b/DSL-504
_Bx_FW_r221b17uk.zip

I've only got experience of the rev A model that I have and updating the
firmware is a cinch.

I managed to upload the firmware via serial console and the xmodem
protocol. After that i did an upload with the web interface to the b14uk
version. Now the router runs smooth and fine without blocking certain
webpages after some time. Yet an upload with the update program for the
b17uk version that you mentioned above still does not work. I still have
to test file transfers with the MSN messenger, cause that did not work
before. In case that works i'll continue using the b14k version.

I seems the B model has got some problems regarding that.
