- Email to Fax - Re-think required!
- Posted by Tiscali Tim on September 24th, 2004
There have been lots of discussions in this NG about how ADSL users can best
send and receive faxes - preferably without needing to use analog fax/modems
over voice lines.
Incoming faxes are no problem - using Fax-to-email facilities provided by
some ISPs or by third parties.
As a PlusNet user, I use their facility for the *very* occasional fax I
receive, using the 0870 number which they have allocated to me. BUT, this
number will lapse if not used every so often (90 days, I think). This means
that I need to send myself a fax at regular intervals to prevent the number
form lasping.
For outgoing faxes, I have been using the free email-to-fax facility
provided by iddd.tpc.int - including sending one to myself to stop my
PlusNet-provided fax number from lapsing. When I first did this, I was
surprised that iddd.tpc.int allowed faxes to be sent to non-geographic
numbers.
Perhaps not surprisingly, therefore, they no longer do so! I tried to send
myself a fax today and got this response:
"Your facsimile job to +44870706xxxx was rejected because:
REJECT: Sorry, we can't let you dial premium rate numbers"
So it's back to the drawing board! I shall have to dust off my old analog
fax/modem and use that instead!
Unless . . . Does anyone know of a free email to fax service which *does*
allow faxes to be sent to 0870 numbers?

It must be a common problem or maybe just a coincidence.
I wanted to send a Fax this am. I'd naively assumed that because
Fax2email was available, the converse was as well.
My DUM doesn't exist anymore - so no solution there.
Perhaps there isn't much demand (but obviously some) and I
suppose Fax is dying out in favour of email.
Maybe as we're both PlusNet users I wonder if they'd like to comment ?

You mean use iddd.tpc.int to send a free fax to a geographic number - and
get the recipient to send a fax to my 0870 number? Brilliant!
I couldn't do it more than once with the same outfit though! (but I'm sure
there are plenty to choose from)

not exactly... I would find a customer enquiry form where fax answers were
an option. Anyway, considering the effort it would make more sense to use

Nobody in their right minds should use their service - the faq page is
riddled with spelling and grammar errors, not to mention other pages
with similar cock-ups.
They have invalid links sprinkled here and there, missing pictures
too.

I too have a plusnet number, an interesting question (to which I don't know
the answer) do you actually need to send a fax or would dialling the number
be enough (josh?) - maybe we should be asking in the plusnet newsgroups
though.
Luckily I have a useless fax machine for sending (doesn't print), and use
the plusnet number for incoming.
Another option would be www.inweb.net.uk who provide free fax2email via
their UMS platform with no need to use it (tbh i've tried to give numbers
back I no longer use and it wont let me).
Understandable, on the other hand emailing direct would assumably be
possible for users with fax2email 0870 numbers.

Hi there,
What would you like us to comment on? If you can be more specific I
will try and answer it for you.
I am not aware of a free fax service. Our fax2email is one way only
and on residential accounts does need to be used once every 90 days to
prevent deactivation of the service. From reading this thread, the
best suggestion although cheeky is to send one from your work to your
home fax2email service as this will definately be free unless caught

kind regards
Luke

depends how "use" is defined... a) answering a call on the number is
one thing, b) actually converting a fax to an e-mail is second, so is
the test on (a) or (b) ? Some people dial 0870 on mobile tariffs as
"included" minutes so would be happy with (a) if it reset the timer
glad you covered your back regarding possible 'misuse' of company
facilities... wouldn't do for someone to get a written warning or
worse on basis of some newsgroup posting from staff at an ISP.

Hi there,
I would always advise actually sending a fax to the number.
I appreciate not everyone has access to a fax machine, my "advice"
above was purely that and I am not able to cover all circumstances or
situations. A library, a shop with a fax service or even many Public
Pay Phones now have a fax service and all can be used to send a fax to
our fax2email service if your account does not receive enough faxes to
keep it active.
kind regards

I have also used efax.com (which generates about one advert a week as an
e-mail, and I can happily put up with that) which seems to have no need
to have regular faxes - in fact they dislike more than 20 a month on a
free account. NB they do seem to have hidden the 0870 but I found a
link from the FAQ page and other parts of the web site. It means at
least I have an alternative in case I ever (a) lost the current P.N
number or (b) changed to use some other ISP... not too high a chance!
