- Entanet - not all it is made out to be.

Because after my own personal experience of using ASDL24 (Entanet Reseller)
with a business connection, anyone with any sense might choose to stay away
from EntaNet or any of their resellers. I have had six whole days of
pleasure then one WHOLE DAY of CATASTROPHIC communications with this bunch
of cowboys - for want of a better word. They cut off my connection because
they "overlooked" my continuous CC authority I had set up with them. They
were full of apologies for this and reinstated my connection within 30 mins
after realising their mistake.
Tonight, just after midnight (10/03/07) my web connection failed. I still
had email and newsgroups (nntp) connections but they were not the ideal
basis to conduct business on.
Eventually I got a "helper" on the phone who suggested it was a software
fault, so I should consider downloading and installing FireFox, instead of
IE7. Well, that would have been fine but it was only after I kinda hung up
in disgust on him that I realised I had NO WAY of downloading FireFox,
supposing I did want to use that geeky thing, because I have NO WORKING
INTERNET BROWSER to download or anything. Apart from that, I have been very
happy with IE for more years than Entanet have been in existence so if push
comes to shove, thank heaven it is only a one month contract.

i may be wrong (and probably am!) but i've had the same problem of web pages
not loading, yet other parts working fine (msn, outlook) i DO use firefox,
and if it was possible to remove internet explorer i would do it in a
second.
usually when the net stops, yet other parts continue, it is a DNS issue.
resetting the router (power off and back on) always worked for me on my old
dlink router, if it works for you then setting the DNS servers in windows
rather than relying on the router is a permament solution. now i've got a
netgear and havent experienced any problems since.

How does that make them cowboys?
We are all human and mistakes do happen, at least they acted promptly to
correct the problem. With other isps you could have been waiting days or
weeks for them to act. At least show credit where it is due.

Does your business not have a laptop? Or do you have a friend with one?
It would be best if you could try another machine on your connection to
confirm it is not software at your end like they are suggesting.

A suggestion well worth disregarding.
No ISP should be trying to blame problems on your choice of browser, it makes no
sense at all.

Hello Eeyore,
Even though IE7 is so incompatible with so many?

They acted like cowboys because they simply chopped off my business package
connection without a single word to me. I spent an hour checking and
double-checking my router settings then phoned their helpline. As soon as
the helper looked up my number he said, "Oh, you have been cut off by our
accounts department for non payment." I told him that was impossible:
Entanet had taken the first month's payment a week *before* I was even
connected to them and only 10 days use had so far expired. "I will connect
you to the person concerned." I waited.
"Oh sorry, they are not available at the moment, can I get them to ring you
back?"
Me: "Yes. please. and do tell them it is urgent."
Operator: "I will send them a text and you should hear within the next
couple of hours."
I then waited over an hour before deciding to try their accounts number
direct. This was answered immediately and on checking, the nice lady told me
she did not understand the cut-off as my rolling credit card authorisation
was in place and valid. She would arrange to have the block lifted "within
thirty minutes" After about 20 minutes I tried my connection and I was back
on line.
Following this episode there was also what seem to have been some fault with
their DNS server last night when a kindly gentleman suggested I use FireFox
despite everything else on my connection working normally: email, nntp
servers, and even Dan Elwell's Broadband speed test managed to ping some 30+
servers worldwide without any problem. But of course, it was all down to
silly old me having the temerity tu use the despised IE7.
Now, where do you want the horses?

Your suggestion makes much more sense than the Entanet man's did. I was also
thinking along the same lines as you but I simply could not get him away
from "browser blame".
I'm also using a Netgear router and as all is back to normal on trying
things today it looks like it was indeed a DNS issue.

All this took place just after midnight and I only had access to a single
machine. As everything is back to normal today it looks IE7 had nothing to
do with the fault.

Incompatible with so many what? It works well for me as have all versions of
that browser. I did used to keep trying new ones over the years after
reading the many security scares and have had Opera, Firefox and others
installed at different times, but I always go back to IE as it is the one I
like best. I do take care to keep security stuff up to date and running and
so far, *touch wood* have never *opened* a virus on any of my machines over
the past 10 years or so. Nor have the assorted malware guardians running in
the background found anything untoward.

All I can say is that you made a good choice choosing an ISP with a one
month contract. Try someone else -could have been worse if you had signed
for a year or more.

You think any other isps could have done better in the situation? Mistakes
happen and they fixed it within the day. Its hardly a hanging offence.
As for the Firefox thing, there is no excuse for shabby advice like that.
It reminds me of the old support response "format your pc".

I spoke to the Entanet 0870 number as there was no reply from ADSL24's
helpline. Sorry about the confusion.

I don't think it is that odd. When your Internet connection is working but
have a specific problem with web browsing trying an alternate browser is a
simple and obvious first step diagnostic.
