is a firmware upgrade permanent?
Posted by wasted on July 15th, 2007

Greetings - I recently upgraded the firmware on my WAG54GS to the latest
version. Is that upgrade now stored in the device itself? I.E. if I press
the reset button, or use the setup pages to "return to factory default" will
the update remain?

Thanks

Yes.

The factory default option just affects the configuration settings.

Although depending on hardware/manufacturer it *may* be possible to
reflash with an earlier version. However this will probably (assuming it
can be done at all) require a special file obtained from the manufacturer,
all I can suggest is that you contact them and ask.

manufacturers site and download an older version and simply install it
again.

After you have completed a firmware update pressing the reset button will
only put all the settings you type in back to standard ones or even blank.

That doesn't always work. Sometimes to revert to an older version you need
to obtain a special reversion file from the manufacturer. That's what I
had to do with my AVM Fritz!Box.

Thanks for the replies - I don't actually want to revert to an earlier
version, I was just curious what would happen if I ever have to use reset.

Thanks again.
