- Flip I'm fed up no ADSL and Slooooow 56K
- Posted by Stevie Boy on October 10th, 2003
HI,
I've been without my adsl for 4 days now... yes 4 days! :-(
It just wont connect although the status light on my asus router/modem is
fine.
The back-up dial up service is like a 14.4k connection taking ages for web
pages to show and e-mails and newsgroup headers to download. SO much so I'm
thinking of bining it all and doing something more positive instead.
Anyone have any clues? I'm with Zen and have talked to their technical
people but dont seem to see any problems. Although ongoing.
The standard bt line test shows no faults either.
The router I am using is an Asus 6000EV and the dialup is the old faithful
US-Robotics message pro ext.
Op system is XP although Ive also tried set-up on Win98 too where 56K was a
wee bit faster which is unusual since XP without a doubt provides better
performance for dial-up.

P.S I'll log back in for replys if I can!!!

Can you login to the test BT account?
You could try resetting your Asus 6000EV and if it has an option to
automatically detect line settings run that again. May also be worth
updating firmware if a new version is available
If not, it will probably currently be set to VC Mux or PPPoA but try all the
other combinations offered like LLC/SNAP, PPPoE, G.DMT and see if that makes
a difference.

Reinstall the OS as you may have picked up a virus

It is not a virus I have done a full virus check via symantic and housecall
also configured the damn lot via ANOTHER hard disc with win98 OS installed.

Tried that but I could not. Wasnt sure how that worked. I entered it on my
router but was FORCED to add a password when one was not needed.
There was no change afterwards.
It's been reset more times than I've had food this week. It does have auto
detect but I have not tried that. On the other hand it has been fine since
April with these settings. Only dropping line (no connection rather than
sync) for a few hours when Zen have had some problems in the past.
It's set to PPPoA/Routed (only option) and VC Mux. I dont know why I should
change these settings when it has been working fine for such a long time.
I have a USB modem that I'm thinking of trying just out of curiosity but I
rather doubt much success.
In past experience it has always been down to the ISP/Bt or my line cables.
The cables have been checked by way of substitution.

One possible reason is that BT have recently upgraded a number of their
routers, resulting in problems for some people when trying to connect using
VC-MUX. This is mentioned on Zens support page here
http://www.zensupport.co.uk/ for the d-link modems/routers, but I have also
heard similar reports on a number of other manufacturers routers/modems. As
this is a known issue, caused by BT performing their upgrades, trying the
LLC option seems like a sensible step.

Yes I have seen the mention on Zen's support page but appears to only relate
to D-Link routers and Zen's technical support helpline has not asked me to
change it.
However as an over look it could well have been worth a try in this light.
But I doubt that would cure the 56k diabolical connection which suggests
other faults.
Zen managed to get BT to do some more line testing and swiftly a enginner
was sent out to cure a fault...
And well hey presto...... ADSL :-) :-) :-) :-) :-) :-) :-) :-) :-) :-) :-)
:-) :-) :-) :-) Just performed a speed test and seems a little slow at
457kps, ho well could be a busy time. Wait till later on or morning.

Anti virus programs only detect known virus and so you should rely only upon
them, as for another hard drive, is it attached to the same machine?
