Force9 or what is better?
Posted by Rob on October 17th, 2005

Hi all, looking for some comments & tips please. Parents about to go
Broadband. They would normally be light users, but I am soon moving
abroad and webcam / Voip will be used a few times a week between me and
them...I guess calls will typically last an hour or so.

Was considering Force9s £14.99 2meg unlimited (but throttled at peak
times). Called them and they said Voip is not throttled, just P2P file
downloading. Don't know if I should believe that as I had read reports
of PlusNet (sister company) even throttling their own NNTP text server!

Any recommendations around the £20 or less mark, bearing in mind the
highest percentage of traffic will be VoIP calls?

Thanks,
Rob

Correct, even on the so called premier accounts, but it is a text and binary
server. Also have been throttling all external news services. They have
now unthrottled some external text servers. When (if) they unthrottle it
they are proposing a 15Gb cap on both internal and external news servers.

Don't go there. They are going downhill. Ever increasing restrictions and
their spin could match Alistair Cambell.

I am seriously considering moving to Metronet but am unsure of their pricing
for 2 M.

Been with Plus.Net for two and half years, lately on their Broadband Plus
tariff.
I have had no problems with VoIP, and I have not noticed any slowdown in
general usage.
Currently they have problem with their NNTP server, (also happened some 18
months ago)
it still works, but it's slow. I don't expect that would be a problem for
your parents anyway.
Force9 / Plus.Net still offers the best value for money for regular & modest
users.
If you sign up with them please use my ID 'wester' as a referrer and save me
few pence,
thanks, regards,

Rubbish!

You can get a Freedom2surf 10GB account for £19.99 a month and on that
Usenet and P2P isn't crippled like it is on Plusnet. And for only
£5.00 more you can have a totally uncapped account!

Oh, that explains why you're recommending Plusnet.

Still breaking the PlusNet TOS then Martin?

Or do PlusNet approve of spamming Usenet on their behalf?

Steve:
I said "regular & modest users", you are obviously blissfully unaware that
90% people don't use P2P, download music, videos or binaries.
Why pay more for something which they don't need ?

Usenet (text) seem to be working again fine tonight, fingers crossed, :-)

As there are two of us working from home we are fairly heavy users.
Plus.Net has been excellent for 2 and half years, that's why I recommend
them.
The odd 50p doesn't make any difference, not to mention it will only work if
both of us stay with
Plus.Net.

Martin

In news:MPG.1dbf84edd80ff85a9898d5@news.eclipse.co.uk ,
Flying Rat whispered softly in my ear...:
Dunno Ratty..I asked them outright in their internal forums a while
back...never did get a reply, the silence was deafening. At least this
guy was upfront though, the one which made me cross just gave a link and
didn't indicate he would gain from it (Vouldn't tell from clicking the
link that he would gain, but the clever peeps nosied). Now that's sneaky
and I don't think PN should be condoning it

If someone comes here pushing a product in which he or she has a
financial interest, then it's advertising. Advertising is not allowed
here in a discussion forum.

Not only that, this guy is blatant with his boilerplate replys and
requests to have his referrer ID used by complete strangers. That is
spamming. He stands to benefit from his pushing of PlusNet so that makes
him a spammer and his 'advice' worthless.

PlusNet must condone it as I've asked directly here in a forum that they
read constantly, and like you have yet to see an answer. So maybe the
Florida penis enlargement and fake Rolex watch spammers should be on the
phone to PlusNet as they apparently condone spamming and would be
welcomed with open arms.
