Freeserve Broadband Networking Setup
Posted by look_up on September 23rd, 2003

Hi,

I'm getting Freeserve Broadband tomorrow and am in the process of
setting up a home network this evening.

We have 2 desktop PCs in my house and 2 laptops. For the desktops I
will be using a standard 10/100 Ethernet PCI adaptor and for the
laptops we will be using Linksys 10/100 USB adaptors - all connecting
to an Origo ADSL Router/Modem.

My question is this - since we will not be using the free USB modem
Freeserve have given us, how do I go about initially setting up the
Broadband connection? Do I just install the software that came with
the Origo Router/Modem or do I install the software that came from
Freeserve. Or both?

any help you could give me would be much appreciated...

cheers, Leo.

You should be able to set up with just your router software.
It will prompt you for your Freeserve user details & password --- with this
info it will be able to log on to your broadband account.
You will also need to run the Windows Networking Wizard to help set the
router up and get all your PCs set up on the network.

Initially it might be easiest to connect one desktop to the router, and
configure things from there...
At a guess, i`d say ignore whatever freeserve gave you and follow the
manual for the router. You will probably be told to type in an IP address
in a web browser, which will bring up a configuration screen. Most of
that should be fairly straightforward - username, password...

Once the router looks about right, you usually have to reset it (there`s
often a button to click in the browser window), and it will take probably
30 seconds to a minute to reboot. You will know when it`s rebooted,
because if you hit refresh in the browser it will reload the page rather
than timing out.

With any luck, the router should then connect by itself whenever the
connection drops...

Then try adding PCs to the network :-)

You may need to alter the connection settings for IE to tell it to access
the internet "across a network".

Ignore all software that Freeserve sent you - apart from being unnecessary
it will "Freeserve Brand" compenents such as Internet Explorer and Outlook
Express with both Freeserve logos and defaults.

You set up the Freeserve ADSL login on the router using the username/password
Freeserve will have sent by letter. Most routers are setup via a simple
built-in Web-server interfaceand do *NOT* require any extra software (at
least for for desktops connected via cables).
