Freeserve broadband & P2P
Posted by Stuart Rogers on September 28th, 2003

My son is thinking of getting broadband, he is currently on Freeserve
anytime so thinks Freeserve a good option as he keeps his email address
etc. However he wants to use P2P, does Freeserve broadband allow it? I've
checked their site and it does not say anything!

P2P works just fine on Freeserve but. as they don't have a cheaper product
which blocks it, they are unlikely to mention it!

You can access a POP3 mailbox from almost anywhere on the planet. That's
the point of POP3. So you can continue to use the same email address using
any ISP.

I'm not sure if the "use it or lose it" policy that is usually applied to
pay as you go accounts is linked to dial access (as opposed to net access)
on all ISPs, but it definitely isn't on the one I use, so probably worth a
try with Freeserve.

You may be happy with the BB service Freeserve offer, but keeping an email
address doesn't need to be part of your reason for choosing.

Re p2p: It's all a question of getting caught, isn't it. I remembered seeing
something on this a couple of months ago and here's the link:

http://groups.google.com/groups?selm...g .google.com .

You can read the full Energis Abuse letter and follow the link thru to
Freeserve T's & C's.

This sort of thing wouldn't put me (or a zillion others) off the practice
but you should be aware that there is a chance, albeit remote chance, that
there may be consequences.

No, Freeserve will put your account on hold if you don't dial-up every few
months. All you have to do is phone them and they will enable it again.
That's been my experience with my old Anytime account.

The Freeserve website used to allow user recovery of accounts on hold as well.

Of course if anyone moved from Freeserve and wants to keep the old mail address running then occasional use of the dial-up service is all that is needed.

Still does. "Retrieve Account" from their front page. I use my FS
mailbox and haven't dialed FS for years. Just reactivate it every few
months. Very handy.

Evidently different ISPs have differing policies on this.

G Writes

My wife has a separate pay-as-you-go FS account which uses my BB
connection over ICS to her laptop. I use the Outlook calendar to pop up
a reminder every 80 days, and I just dial up with the PAYG for moment,
and all is well.

I should imagine you can have as many PAYG email addresses as you want
connecting via the same Anytime or BB account.
