Just a few days then to 99.6% of exchanges being 8 Mbit enabled. Exciting
huh ?!

Yippee - perhaps Pipex might increase the speed for existing customers
who are now on a lower speed than they offer as standard to new ones,
at a higher cost.

Does it matter which ISP you are with, in other words can they cap the speed
from the exchange back down to my existing speed of 2Mbit or will my
connection simply automatically speed up on the day they have enabled the
faster Max DSL speed ?

ISP's can cap the speeds. In addition to this they still need to submit
regrade or modify orders to BT Wholesale even after your exchange work
has been completed.

For a *rough* guide of when your exchange work is due for completion

Have you signed into My Pipex to check if you can migrate across?

I remember this happening before to me, they hadn't told me about any
change being available, but I signed into the site and found I could
swap across to a faster plan at no cost.

I haven`t checked in the last couple of weeks, but there`s been no
info to say I could move to a faster connection for the same cost...

Its only been about 6 months since they (finally) regraded me to 1Mbit
as part of the upgrade rollout...

Mine is or was anyway, so much for that then. Maybe some time in April,
maybe not even though the DSL zone page says my exchange has been enabled in
reality it has'nt. Anyone else's exchange actually had the Max DSL treatment
today ??

Hmmmmm..... Are you expecting an instant regrade to get some higher speed,
simply because the exchange is *capable* of that now ? Remember that there
will need to be orders placed by ISPs to request individual customer lines
get regraded. There are fees for some changes (250 or 500 being regraded
to IPstream Max) but not for those on 1000 or 2000 kbps, but whether the
ISP will have to pay a fee or not, BT Wholesale cannot change everyone,
at least not "overnight", without a major degree of chaos... Remember
that for DSL Max to work, the exchange tries different speeds on the
connection, and some may not want the effects of this (eg some firm
with a mail server on their connection, won't be wanting instability
and disconnections for the next week or ten days, but may want to get
it done later in the year, or when they have mail feed switched to the
second connection, so any downtime through this change won't affect the
mail for them!) It may also depend on which ISP you use, and whether it
plans for a new 12 month contract for letting you have this regrade (even
if they are actually getting the regrade free from BT Wholesale). Surely,
the way you should find out about when to expect the regrade is to check on
your ISP's web site for information, but don't hold your breath for having a
higher speed connection unless you are ready to switch ISP... I'm sure those
who migrate to another ISP and new customers will be getting their speed up,
and if not, will be moving on to some ISP which will give the regrade! PGM.

Well no. More because Zen said my order for regrading was fullfilled on the
5th of March. I assumed that with my order already in place, BT would be
able to activate it more or less on the same day. It would seem (following
an email from Zen this morning) that it will take a few more days yet.

Just a shame Zen didn't make this clearer *before* the supposed switchover
date.

Sorry, that wasn't clear from your post saying it was sluggish.

I had (wrongly) assumed you were like the majority of users, with
knowledge the service was launched yesterday, and expecting their
connection to be regraded within 48 hours (hmmm, we can dream :-)

They probably hadn't been told of any delay, until they checked back
with BT Wholesale today :-( I guess a lot of others will also be on
the phone to BT Wholesale, on behalf of their customers, some may be
more patient than others :-)) Peter M.

That's extremely unlikely. That 31/3 was the first day on which BT
would accept orders for upgrade on activated exchanges and that because
of the quantity of upgrades it would take several weeks to implement
them was well known. The delay was even referred to in the press
release BT issued three or four weeks ago.

I can quite understand there being delays for them to even accept the
millions of regrade orders, but are you suggesting orders placed just
yesterday are likely to take several weeks ? Either Zen has not put
this customer's order in, because of some admin mistake, or did, but
there's still some delay because of the level of orders placed. I'd
expect there to be significant delays overall, which is why I've made
a few comments today about the workload and timescales, but this might
be something outside Zen's control, when they may have even placed the
order for Tim in their very first batch... Peter M.

I can't find the actual press release but from a, usually reliable, news

"BT Wholesale is NOT going to carry out automatic upgrades of lines,
this is down to your individual service provider, and at this time BT
Wholesale is warning that it may take several months to regrade all the
expected lines that providers will want switched."

They couldn't place the order before yesterday, BT were not accepting them.

If Zen placed the order yesterday then there it will probably be done
quite quickly. There has been at least one comment on ADSLGuide about
somebody being notified that their upgrade will take place on 3/4 - I
don't know which ISP though.

That's exactly as I expected it to be, based on what my ISP has stated in
Q+A about IPstream Max, but doesn't really answer/contradict my point - I
wouldn't expect orders placed yesterday to be unduly delayed, just taking
the normal "up to 10 days" to be scheduled.

Understood, it was the difference between a few days delay for this one user
and the weeks/months most users will have to resign themselves too which was
not very clear in your post. I had assumed Zen, like every other ISP, would
know that the complete customer base would take lots of months to do, but it
did not seem likely they'd expect more than a few days for someone who might
have asked for their line to be regraded in the last few weeks, knowing they
had an exchange capable of it, and merely needing to persuade Zen to place a
regrade order ASAP.

I guess Tim is just expecting miracles - it depends what his exchange with
Zen might have contained about when it would be *likely* and whether they
just gave an optimistic view about it being done as soon as available or
his view on "as soon as available" not matching with the real situation
of it not being on day #1 :-)

Whilst it may have been clear to the some of this groups regulars, I

Perhaps what I was told by my ISP is bull then but they said when BT had
updated my exchange then I would automatically get the faster speed etc.

So the 2 websites mentioned on here, DSL zone being one of them is really
giving totally false info by listing all the 1000's of exchanges as having
been updated...when they have'nt...or have they ?!

The exchanges have been upgraded.

Accounts will only be upgraded when the order is passed to BT from the
ISP.

And (according to Plusnet), ISPs are being limited to a maximum of 700
order per day each until the end of April.
