Geographical IP location

How do sites such as www.whatsmyipaddresss.com know where you are
geographically located? Sometimes it's very accurate but not always.

Try sticking the IP address in at www.ripe.net and all will become
clear. That's the IP registry for Europe.

Hmm - it shows I'm in Birmingham.
I'm in south Wales actually!
Pretty accurate then...

It has absolutely no idea where you're located. It knows where the owner of
that IP address, usually your ISP, has registered it to though.

Although it does know where my ISP is (Sheffield). A number of sites which
I visit from time to time have banner ads which advertise services in
Sheffield, which is bog all to me as I live 200 miles away.

My ISP lets me fill in my own RIPE details. I guess, because of that, I
get a lot of targeted 'local' stuff (e.g. girls in 'xxxxx' want to meet
you NOW)!

Seems that some databases run by ipligence need updating as they show some
allocated IPs in the wrong country.
