- Home Hub - Not with BT
- Posted by Andrew on March 2nd, 2007
Is it possible to use the BT home Hub as a modem / router if I am with an
ISP other than BT?
Also I would to use the DMT tool to tweak the SNR margin; could somebody
tell me which firmware the home hub will need in order to work with the DMT
tool and where to download the firmware from.
Thanks in advance,
Andy

But with hacking yes......The real question is why would you want
to???

Because I have got one very cheap and want to try to force a higher sync
speed by using DMT tool to reduce the target SNR. What hack is required to
unlock the BT Home Hub?
Thanks,
Andy

Blimey, that's a name from the past
From what I know, various attempts have been made to unlock the Home
Hub, none of which have yet been successful....

Andy,
Yes you can use another ISP with the HH. Underneath the BT
customizations is a Thomson Speedtouch and it can be configured to any
lan/wan setup, just like the others. Do this:
1. Download a copy of the CLI Reference Guide for any similar Thomson
ADSL Gateway. Read it!
2. Through the normal web GUI "Backup Configuration", save the
configuration. It will put a copy of "user.ini" on your browsing computer.
3. Edit this file for your particular ISP. The important sections are:
[phone.ini] - Check the vpi/vci is correct for your ISP.
[atm.ini] - "encaps" & "ulp" must be correct.
[eth.ini] - only if you have bridged ethernet ATM, else blank.
[ppp.ini] - only if you have PPPoE or PPPoA, else blank.
[ip.ini] - if you have static IP, set up the interface here.
[dnsc.ini] & [dnss.ini] - if you have static DNS servers, add them
[nat.ini] - if your IP address is static, add it.
4. Use the web GUI "Restore Configuration" to restore this edited file.
The HH will restart & if you got it all correct, you will be on the
internet with your ISP. Use both the GUI ("Check Connectivity" is very
useful) & the CLI to check if you configurations have been set. The HH
will silently bounce things it cannot understand or are not valid & will
even revert to factory defaults if it gets it knickers in a twist.
Re-edit the file & re-Restore as many times as it takes. Patience is
required!
For the record, I have sucessfully reconfigured the HH. I have the
bruises to prove it!
Happy hacking!

"> Malcolm,
Now have the Home Hub but with the latest firmware (6.2.2.6) it is not
possible to Backup the user.ini file as suggested. There is no option in
the GUI to do this.
Any other way. Is it possible to force an older firmware onto the home hub?
Thanks,
Andy

Various hacks are discussed on these sites. I believe I saw mention of
version roll-back and/or getting the necessary access on the new S/W.

I have now managed to force the hub back to 6.1.1.M firmware and using
telnet I managed to set up the default access tothe router as a SuperUser.
I can now dump a copy of user.ini to my hard drive and edit it but it isn't
that clear what needs to be edited. I am working on this but using trial
and error could make it a length process.

If your ISP account also uses PPPoA like BT, then it may be as simple as
just editing the [ppp.ini] section. At a minimum, you will have put
"user=<your account username> password=<your account password>" in place
of "user=bthomehub@btbroadband.com"
Also check that the VPI*VCI values are correct for your account in the
[phone.ini] section.
Look in the CLI reference for lists of available parameters for the
various sections. In general [xxx.ini] will refer to 'xxx' commands, but
some command groups are split up. For example, [dhcs.ini] refers to
'dhcp server' commands and [dhcc.ini] refers to 'dhcp client' commands.
The account that I successfully configured was for a fixed IP address,
bridged Ethernet-over-ATM account, so I had to change quite a lot more,
but not all that much.

Malcolm,
Thanks for the pointers. In the end I forced the Speedtouch 7G firmware
onto the Home Hub and am now connected to my non BT ISP.
All appears to be working well, an initial DNS error was sorted by a reboot
and I have now used the DMT tool to force my SNR margin down in order to
improve sync speed which was main objective.
Thanks,
Andy

It shows up in the firmware and certainly looks like it should work; don't
have phone to hand at the moment but will try it out tomorrow night.
