How do I know if a broadband routers work in UK with any ISP?
Posted by Asdren Begaj on October 23rd, 2003

I bought D-Link DSL-300G+ ethernet ADSL modem and I was planning to get
Kinksys Wireless router (BEFW11S4) but someone told me that it might not
work because it doesn't support PPPoA (what ever that is?!).

Can you please enlighten me?

Thanks in advance...

Two basic ways that routers communicate with the data networks - ethernet
(PPoE) or ATM (PPoA).

If you're connected to the BT network (which includes pretty much all UK
ISP's) then PPoA is the preferred option as the BT Core data network is ATM
based.

PPoE tends to be used with cable companies who use ethernet backbone's.

BT are said to be autosensing which type of router you have, but as
99.9999% of the routers used in the UK for ADSL are PPoA, I'd stick with
them to be safe.

Surely it's designed for non-optimally routed phone lines.

It should work - the Linksys is just a router so continue to use your D-Link
ADSL modem and plug it into that..

The model you quoted supports the 802.11b wireless networking standard -
depending on your needs make sure you woudnt be better off with one which
supported 802.11g instead

Hi,

The easiest way I have found is to check it has support for the
following protocols, which must available with your ADSL Modem /
Router in order for it to function with the BT ADSL service:

* ADSL Modulation: G.DMT or ANSI T1.413
* Encapsulation Mode: PPP over ATM (PPPoA - RFC2364) VC-MUX

Ian
