- How to flash firmware in D-Link DSL-300G+ modem?
- Posted by Matt West on November 23rd, 2003
I've just got a D-Link DSL-300G+ modem and used it for the first time
this weekend. After hours of getting no where, I've finally got my
broadband working, but it is at a terrible speed - *much* slower than
ISDN 64K!!
The first thing I was going to try was to flash the firmware in the
modem as it is running R2.05.b4t9uk and new version on D-Link's site
is R2.05.b4t12uk.
However, each time I try and upload the new firmware file, the browser
interface hangs or the LAN activity stops and even after I've left it
for 20 mins, there is nothing happening.
Has anyone else managed to upgrade their modem?
I've found the HTML interface on this modem to be extremely unreliable
and it takes ages for the pages to refresh and they generally timeout
each time. I've also tried the telnet access, but this isn't very
user friendly and you need documentation to understand the commands -
but D-Link don't seem to publish this.
Any help will be appreciated. Also, does anyone have any ideas why my
ADSL connection is so slow?
I'm connecting the DSL-300G+ directly to my PC currently - but I
intend to put it onto a D-Link VPN router once I've got it configured
and working properly.

I'd consider returning the modem, and obtaining a new one.
I'm more-or-less happy with the ASR-8100 I bought from ebuyer for around
25 quid.

Follow this quick setup guide. Its written for a DSL-300G+ and DI-614+ but
can be used for a DI-624 or DI-624+ router. You initially only need pages
2-6.

I use the DSL-300G+ with the same firmware version as you and have no probs
at all. Try connecting the modem directly to the master BT socket. This will
prove the direct connection from the modem to the exchange is good. If you
are using extension cabling you can then work back from the BT Master
socket.
I wouldn't be too hasty to re-flash the modem yet. The R2.05.b4t9uk firmware
is fit for purpose.

Well if you consider unchangable default passwords an unchangable
30 second DHCP lease time acceptable then yes. It might be that
the new firmware fixes these 'features'.

I've been running R2.05.b4t9uk with these "features" for over two months
now.
Once he's up and running *THEN* is the time to fiddle with the firmware.
What would happen if the reflash failed before he knew whether his kit is
working? One stuffed modem, one confused user, with no way of knowing what
went wrong.
My advice was to get up and running first, using the modem as supplied by
D-Link.
BTW, where did you find the details of the upgrade (link required)? Whilst I
found that there is an upgrade on the D-Link website, I couldn't find out
what it "fixed".

No, it does not.
Fair point.
I have no idea what it fixes yet. When I get the chance I intend to
flash my modem and find out. In the meantime if anyone does have
a list of what it fixes I would be interested to find out.

I moaned to D-Link tech support as I use a DSL-300G+ modem and DI-624
router.
I sent one of my DI-624 router logs to D-Link tech support showing the 30
sec DHCP request problem.
Their reply is as below :-

We have had quite a bit of this with customer using this equipment with
Virgin internet.
Even if you do not use them, it could be a good idea to speak with your ISP
and get them to check the DHCP status, why the leases are so short. You can
also try updating the firmware from:
ftp://ftp.dlink.co.uk/pub/broadband/
If this does not help you may wish to contact us at one of our toll free
numbers between 0800 and 2000 Monday thru Friday:

So far, I can't see it being an ISP problem [PIPEX] (I could be wrong - I
have been known to be!). I'm reluctant to reflash the modem 'cos I can't
find out what the new firmware "fixes", and at least its still working :-)

Well you can throw Plusnet in to the mix as well as local ISP up
here in the north east. Further more you should in theory be
able to change the lease times with the current firmware. Problem
is that it does not work.
