How is 'IP profile' on BT speedtester decided?
Posted by Kit on March 31st, 2007

When I do the BT speedtest part of the results message says:
IP profile for your line is - 5500 kbps

This doesn't seem to be related to my router info or to data for my
line on my ISP webpage.

My current router stats are:
Attainable line rate : 8152 kbit/sec
Attainable Atm rate : 7168 kbit/sec
Used line rate : 7476 kbit/sec
Fast used Atm rate : 0 kbit/sec
Interleaved used Atm rate : 6560 kbits/sec

On my ISP webpage my line details say:
Maximum stable rate 7392Kbps
Line speed 6240Kbps
Fault threshold 5152Kbps

So what exactly is the 'IP profile' and how is it calculated?

Thanks

Kit

It's a rate limit calculated and imposed by BT equipment in order to
regulate the amount of traffic from the BRAS (Broadband Remote Access
Server) to the DSLAM at the exchange. It will always be lower than your
recent sync rates. There's much more detail on web sites such as
<http://aaisp.net/maxmagic.html>, <http://aaisp.net/maxatm.html> and
<http://newsnet.googlepages.com/maxdsldiagnostics>.

Thanks for the links.
Having read them, my interpretation (as a non-technical person) is that
the profile should increase after 3 days, depending on the BT system
'heartbeats'.

After 5 days of the same router stats as above there was no change in
ISP profile reported by the BT speedtester. Then I reset the router
(just the one time) and got a new synch rate:-

Attainable line rate : 8732 kbit/sec
Attainable Atm rate : 7680 kbit/sec
Used line rate : 8052 kbit/sec
Fast used Atm rate : 0 kbit/sec
Interleaved used Atm rate : 7072 kbits/sec
Rel. capacity occupation : 92
Noise Margin : 9 dB
Line attenuation : 23 dB
Output Power : 19 dBm

Now, 5 days after that and with no more resynchs the ISP profile
reported by the BT speedtester is still the same - 5500 kbps.

So why is the profile not updating? Is there a stuck BRAS? If so, how
do I get it unstuck?
Having read the links provided by Tony it say that it's a bad idea to
try to unstick it by switching the router on and off several times.
However, I can't find anywhere in those links that says how it can be
unstuck.

Thanks for any help.

Correct (assuming that your sync rates remain higher than the step
threshold for the new IP Profile).

That isn't surprising if the relevant sync rate from your router stats
is the 6560 kbits/sec. The "maxatm" page shows that you'd have to sync
at or above 6816 kbit/sec (for 3 days) in order to increase your IP
profile to 6Mbit/sec.

That *is* surprising A sync rate of 7072 kbits/sec (for 3 days)
ought to result in an IP Profile of 6Mbit/sec. You're *sure* there
weren't any resyncs (not just manual resets by you, but also including
automatic resyncs if the noise margin drops too much)?

I believe that the correct method is to raise a fault with your ISP.
Whether they respond helpfully and knowledgeably to it may be another
matter.

Good luck.
