- How much longer before I reach ADSL sanctuary
- Posted by andrew dunlop on October 11th, 2003
After waiting three years for Broadband the last few days are proving the
hardest to bare!
My line has HH (for the last three years so out of contract). I have bought
a ADSL router which I have configured, (I am about 2K from the exchange).
Pipex received my order on the 22/SEPT for the 1MB service, the order was
passed to BT on the 6/OCT and my exchange was enabled on the 8/OCT, I am
keeping regular tabs on the Pipex order tracking page, all it says is that
the order has been passed to BT for activation.. The BT availability checker
says that I can get ADSL up to 2MB and that my exchange is enabled.
So what's the likely timescale from here? Do I need to wait for a letter
from BT to confirm that I wish the conversion to take place? then is there
another delay whilst they deal with my reply and then another delay to the
engineer calls out to remove the HH box?
Or will I get a call, email telling me when the engineer will call, I am
hoping to be online via ADSL this next week. What are my odds?
ps A big thank you for the good advice I have received here already!

My exchange has been activated for a couple of years but I only applied for
ADSL when Pipex did the 1Mb service. My application was submitted by Pipex
to BT on Monday and I am already active (although Monday (13/10/03) was
supposed to be the official start. Plug the router in and see if the ADSL
light stays lit if it does then you are active although you will still have
to wait for your username and password.

What should happen is that Pipex should contact you and fix an appointment
for BT to come around and remove the HH box and install ADSL at the same
tme.
"HH conversion" appointments normally start about 2 weeks after an exchange
is enabled - if your line was an analogue one the chances of you been
enabled this week were "good" - however as you have HH you may have to wait
an extra week.
This assumes that Pipex know that your order is an "HH/ISDN conversion"
(cost £50) - if Pipex don't know your existing line is a HH one your line
fail the line test.
BT themselves are very unlikely to contact you at all (apart from the
engineer visit) - all communication is done with them via your ISP.

Sunil,
Thanks for the full SP, Pipex *should* know that I am on HH as it was a
question I was asked as part of the online order process, not happy that
having HH will incur a delay though after all they have had my order since
the 22/sep (pipex). yet still the order checker reads "Your order has been
processed by PIPEX and was forwarded to BT on 06/10/2003 for final checks
and to schedule a provisioning date" so what have BT been doing with my
order since the 6th? Makes me wonder whether it will be processed as a
manual order this next week (it's for the 1MB trial service) though I
wouldn't have thought that Pipex would have forwarded my order on the 6th!
For a day the order tracker said that there was a problem with my order and
that it was being escalated within BT, that message dissapeared a few days
ago.
Really I just need to chill out and let the process run it's course.
Thanks,
Andy

Probably as your exchange wasn't enabled then!
BT probably started working on your order on the 8th...
On newly enabled exchanges BT normally do the "straightforward/self install"
ADSL installations first - hence the delay in HH conversions - it gives them
a chance to spot any unexpected problems and also connect more customers
quicker.
As you say, the best policy is just to waut and see..
