- How much will BT do to make ADSL work?
- Posted by Mike on October 10th, 2003
At the moment I have Home Highway and am considering migrating to ADSL
(with Nildram - good idea?).
The BT line test checker for my line and adjacent ones shows the line to
be quite long but they SAY it should be OK (they would wouldn't they)
However in the old analogue days the line was sometimes quite noisy even
for a phone and so I expect that the faults will stop ADSL working
reliably.
I don't want to have an unreliable serivice when I have got used to the
ISDN reliability.
I suspect that they could be able to improve things by mending the line
faults as neighbours (on the same exchange building) never had the same
problem.
Will they do that?
Will I have to go with working ADSL on installation and keep complaining
till they mend the line?
If they reject it straight away thats sort-of OK as at least I won't
have to pay the upgrade fee but if it is an impossible situation I will
be worse off.
Mike
PS has anyone every tried crossing the BT man's hand with silver to get
pairs swapped with someone a few doors away who would never notice a
faulty line?????

Best option is to arrange a Home Highway-->ADSL coversion via your choosen
ISP
It costs £50 and means that BT will come around, uninstall HH and install
ADSL for you all on the same day.
If your line fails the ADSL line test, BT will replace HH for you and you
will not be charged anything.
The other option is paying BT £50 to convert your HH line back to PTSN(a
normal line) and then getting ADSL installed as 2 different processes-
however if your line fails the ADSL test this way you'll be left without HH
and would have to pay a new installation/conversion fee if you wanted it
again (+
new 12 month contract) and since the cost is the same as the 1st option...
If your line passes the ADSL line test it will work - thats what the line
test proves... - if afterwards your "voice" line is noisy - log that as a
normal voice fault (nothing to do with ADSL - as long as you are correctly
filtering)

No they wouldn't as it more hassle to sell you a service which
doesn't/couldn't work. Remember there is no SLA with DSL & if it does
get tested out of limits after it's been fitted you will lose your
service. Pain for you & very bad publicity for BT so they are open &
honest (as the suits can be) about this matter
The noise fault would have also caused problems for your HH, so it's
looks like they have been sorted, doesn't it...
If you're within limits & your kit is up to scratch then it should be
reliable, having said that I know of HH which are anything but
reliable...
As already stated it looks like they have already done that as the
noise faults (or should that be the faults causing the noise) have
been sorted out for you to have reliable HH (HH is far more vunerable
to line faults than noprmal POTS, DSL keeps on working even when the
phone goes dead)
Sunil has covered the procedures to go through to get it done & I
would suggest you stop looking for problems before they happen, if
your line is not suitable you will not get DSL it is as simple as
that.

If your BT phone line is noisy. Complain and they will fix it
,Eventually. i had a similar fault on my line a few years ago, every
time it rained the line crackled. Turned out to be water leaking into
the man hole and on to the cables. If the fault is intermittent be sure
to tell them.
