I'd suggest switching to Postfix. I'm sure there is a setting to cope
with floods but I can't find it in the book but I remember reading
about a solution to your problem in 'Postfix The Definitive Guide' from
O'Reilly. I do use spamhaus to filter incoming IP addresses and so far
have not seen a genuine email blocked. Initially I was getting several
hundred attempts a day but these were rejected and now it's dropped to
about a dozen or so. I've been running it for 5 months now.
Postfix is available for FreeBSD in the ports tree and replaces the
sendmail binaries with it's own versions on installation so that any
scripts you have that are dependant of sendmail will still work.
