Human contact with OneTel required
Posted by Derrick Fawsitt on January 23rd, 2005

I have been trying to make direct contact with a "human person" in
OneTel to take issue with them about land line billing charges and then
cancel my contract with them. I have used that wretched website which it
seems is designed to prevent one ever having contact with them person to
person. The telephone numbers listed have such a convoluted rigmarole to
go through which seems designed to make one "give up" and remain
subscribed to their system for ever. When I finally did get through to
"India" the very nice girl was most helpful at first until you felt you
were talking to a computer with one script from which she could not
depart.
I would be most grateful if someone could give me a telephone number
which would get results for me.

if all else fails, cancel your Direct Debit, inform Onetel via snailmail
(just to be courteous)
and watch what happens then ;-)

You could try ringing them from phone thats not 1 tel enabled/listed
with their 1878 prefix; then an operator will come on trying to sign
you up, and away you go!!

You could also try 1 tel web e mail support message system.

If you think that they're in the wrong about something, then whatever means
you use to get in touch with them threaten them with escalating the issue to
the regulator (OFCOM, I assume in this case). In my experience, and
regulated industry, when threatened with the intervention of the regulator,
will become a lot more co-operative.

Out of interest, what were your problems? I'm considering switching to them
for landline and ADSL, mainly because I've used them for 7 years for cheap
US calls.

Cheers,
Paul DS.

I am currently paying approx £12.99 per month for 24/7 free landline
calls to 01/02 tel. nos. and yet I get a bill for £70 for the billing
period and it should be about half that amount. Having looked at my
calls on the website I needed to contact them by phone and found it
enormously difficult to do so. I eventually got a girl who was in India
and explained my problem to her. I told here I could not understand my
charges and she said we must have been dialing premium numbers and/or
using the internet. I checked and my premium numbers do not add up to
anything like the excess in my bill and I am on ADSL so don't phone any
number. She could only read out her "litany" of text and was unable both
to help me further or put me on to anyone else. Effectively I was being
cut off from any ability to sort out my problems with another human
being and that is not acceptable. I intend to use TalkTalk from CarPhone
Warehousing or that Pecan crowd, (correct me), anything but OneTel, does
that answer your question.

Get your point. I've dealt with the Indian call centre as well. The girl I
dealt with was somewhat taken aback when I refused to give her my account
password over the phone.

I have to say that I've never found their support much good but their
American call charges are very cheap and with an American wife, that has
made it worth being with them. Bringing that into the equation, they work
out cheapest for a combined "phone, ADSL, America" package. Perhaps I'll
live to regret it but I have taken out some "insurance" in that I bought a
domain name sometime ago so changing ISPs does not require me changing my
e-mail address - I just redirect it to my new ISP. Currently I'm with Demon
but they seem to be moving away from home users and their ADSL is relatively
expensive.

Thanks for responding though. No doubt those "non-0870" numbers might come
in handy soon ;-).

your calls through Telediscount, www.telediscount.co.uk/ click on enter
and scroll down to USA and you will get 2p per minute. I and my friends
have saved hundreds of pounds phoning Ireland, (for example), at 1p per
minute.
Better still, if you have Broadband and a small mike on your PC,
download SKYPE and talk to your US friends, (as I do), in perfect Hi Fi
sound for "nothing". Downloading SKYPE and using it costs "nothing", if
you have free Internet access, preferably Broadband and no its not like
other chat programs with cameras etc., its quality sound.
take a look at their portal site, www.plus.net/residential/
do look out for me or let me know.

Re: US Calls etc.
Rather then going with Skype, set you self up with VoIP service from
sipgate.co.uk (free).
You get free geographical UK number (local or any area) so it's just like a
second line
with NO rental. Calls are just 1.19p/m, but you can call anyone with
(almost) any std VoIP
anywhere for FREE.

Martin

Amazing and I have just registered, thank you for that. I used
TeleDiscount until now and its still very good but this is cheaper, at
least for now.
One thing I would like to know, although my landline is rented, (like
most UK consumers), from BT, I presently use OneTel for my calls. Do I
get the above discounts or would I have to be actually "making" via BT
as my call provider. I must add, I have tried a call to Ireland and the
voice assured me it was charged at 0.05, (half a penny), per minute. Is
that all I will be charged or will OneTel charge me any surcharge?
I would be grateful for an assurance before I use it further.

Derrick:
Once you have dialled the 1899 prefix the call gets routed via 1899.com and
neither BT nor OneTel will
(or should not) charge you anything. OneTel won't even know anything about
it.
