- Indications of ADSL line activity

Hi,
I'm waiting for ADSL to be installed.
Can you tell if anything is happening just by listening using a standard
telephone - in the same way that you can hear a 56k modem establishing a
circuit?
Is it the ADSL modem or BT's exchange equipment that starts up the link?

No - once the link is in action (and even with the the best microfilters!)
you may be able to hear a slight background noise on the phone line BUT......

.....it's the ADSL modem which establishes the link and the exchange equipment
responds.

No - you won't hear anything while your modem is syncing with the exchnage
However, if you use ADSL and do not filter your voice calls, you may "hear"
interference
The BT exchange equipment just sits there for the ADSL modem to make its
presence felt.

connected and you will hear a modem tone - theirs. With dial-up the ISP
signals first and your modem responds. With ADSL it's the other way around;
your modem signals first and the exchange responds, so if your ADSL modem
is not connected you shouldn't hear anything. Not that you should hear
anything at audio frequencies anyway as the ADSL signal is above audio
frequencies up to about 1MHz, though some intermodulation products might
manifest as background noise.
You can connect your ADSL modem in advance of the connection date, and if
it has a light on the front to indicate a carrier, this will come on as
soon as the exchange is connected to you, though their connection to your
ISP may take a few days longer. Some ADSL modems have diagnostic or
moniutoring software that can give a bit more detail.
