Interleaving, what is it?
Posted by Terry on June 19th, 2008

According to my router it says INTERLEAVING is turned on....

What is Interleaving and why is it turned on?

Is it soemthing I can turn on and off by me, or is it something to do with
the ISP or BT?

Thanks
Terry

Your wrinkles, like mine, are showing. Can you remember 8" floppy disks?

Circa 1989 we used to have one built into an IBM3270 cluster controller
that linked all our terminals to the 370 mainframe..!

Anyone else remember the IBM 3270 PC..? Looked like an XT but had a
mainframe terminal built in. First PC I ever used, massive 10MB hard
drive..!

I was amazed to see 8" floppy discs still in use at VT Skelton (formerly
BBC Skelton) shortwave broadcasting station when I went on a technical
visit there last year. They were used to store the programme schedule
to allow automatic switching of aerials etc.

Whether they would let you try to read yours though is another matter....!

I'm not bothered about that part - if necessary I'll build an interface

: Hmm, I can't get too nostalgic about that m/c. However see
: http://www.nothingtodo.org/classiccmp/3270pc.htm for more details.

That's the beast..! I used to work for the Civil Engineering dept at BR
and we used the 3270PC to download plots of tunnel profiles to send to a
big plotter that used 4 ballpoint pens..! That plotter was a noisy beast,
it had suction pumps to pull the paper tight on the rollers as the pens
went across, it had to have its own little room, it was far too loud to go
in the main open plan office..!
