Intermittent Disconnect
Posted by Michael Burrows on November 18th, 2003

Hi
Until recently I used BTOpenworld adsl with no problems. Then I moved
house and joined PlusNet. Now I get disconnected every day or so.
PlusNet say I have to check modem, wiring and disconnect all other
equipment from the line. This will be done when I get another phone
line and borrow another router but I'm not optimistic about this being
the cause, because the wiring worked OK for the last guy and the modem
worked OK for me before.

I can reconnect by trying various test logins and alternating between
two logins PlusNet have provided. Even if the line drops, why doesn't
the modem just reconnect? It just shows the status "connecting", not
"connected" - and ADSL status always shows it to be sync'd. PlusNet
mutter about stale sessions. What are they, how do they affect me, and
can I make them go away?

Hope you can help
Thanks
Mike

Following PlusNet's diagnostic procedure it seems

Hi Mike,

I have been having the same trouble and not been able to fix things,
especially BT, if you look back at my recent posts here
http://makeashorterlink.com/?Y26512496 where I have gone through most of my
steps taken.
My guess is that BT have made a few changes to their network architecture
and the effects are just being felt.
Can you tell me what your line loss & SNR are? Was it ever tested by a BT
service engineer and what were the results on the APTS test? What is the
line distance from the exchange, the capacitance with and without the ADSL
filter connected and also what service you are on? Your router will probably
tell you the line loss, SNR and the capapcitance, line distance can be
obtained from BT fault repair service on 151, please report the values in
figures rather than percentages.
I am trying to get someone at BT Network management interested in this.
Anyone else with similar probs please post here too.

A friend of mine has had a similar experience.
Everything worked fine until a the major outage several months back.
At that time disconnections were taking place very regularly - sometimes
ever 15 mins - worst at peak periods.
BT kept on saying try these hardware solutions and try reinstalling the
modem. I tried everything to cure it bar a complete system rebuild - no
success.
Recently had a total loss of service because BT has disconnected adsl on the
line at the exchange. When they reconnected everyting went back to ok.

Modem was one of their usb ones but changed to a usb router.

Hi Chris

Could you give me the details I require if you remember them? Any details at
all, ISP, town, when etc You are welcome to email me them, I need numbers to
get people interested in this.
