Internet connection question
Posted by Pjmac35 on July 22nd, 2007

I have a broadband, always-on internet connection, through Outlook Express
6. From time to time, I getb a message box headed, "Would you like to go
Offline?" In the box it says something beginning, "No Internet connection
is currently available..." With a box labelled "Work Offline" and one
labelled, "Try Again". If I click "Try Again" I get connected again but I
find this an irritation. Anyone know what's causing this?

Look at the router config. Maybe there's an inactivity timeout which drops
the connection after a certain time if nothing is received or transmitted?
Find how to disable this - maybe by setting it to a very long time, or even
zero. Your manual should tell you.

Also, Virgin might be dropping the connection after a period of inactivity.
If so, the way round that is to make sure that there always *is* some
activity - by scheduling OE, Mailwasher, etc. to check for new emails (say)
every 10 minutes.

You haven't got OE set to hang up after sending and receiving, have you?
Check tool/options/connections and untick the box.

Your internet connection is NOT "through Outlook Express 6".

There's your first problem.

Who is your broadband supplier and how is the connection configured ? And where
did you get the idea that OE provides your internet connection ?

Are you using a USB connected ADSL modem btw ?

OK, not sure if this will work but I osume you use Internet Explorer?

If so open Internet Explorer, Go to the "Tools" Tab at the top and
click it, scroll down to "Internet Options" and click that, choose the
"connections" tab at the top and click that and then make sure that
"Never dial a connection is selected".

Actually use Firefox most of the time, but if I use IE7 the same thing
occurs, and, Yes, that "Never dial a connection" box is ticked.

As you will have gathered, I'm a bit of a novice and when I got the router,
I made the connections as per manual, used the automatic detection option
and it all worked first time! I did subsequently set up WEP protection but
that's all.

Have you looked at the router config to see whether the inactivity timeout
is set sensibly (as I suggested earlier)?

Is OE6 running all the time - or do you just run it when you want to send or
receive emails? If running all the time, is it regularly checking for new
emails? If so, how often? [You may need to do this if Virgin are doing an
inavtivity disconnnect.]

As an aside, does Virgin provide you with a fixed IP address[1], or is it
different each time you connect? If the latter, it likely that they DO
disconnect you after a period of inactivity - 'cos this means that they
don't need such a big pot of IP addresses.

[1] You can find this by logging on to your router (point your browser at
the router's LAN IP address) and looking at the status page. Somewhere, it
should show the WAN IP address - which is the one allocated by Virgin.

1 I only start OE6 if I'm checking email/newsgroups

2 Router Status: Under ADSL Gateway it gives 62.253.189.143 and under
LAN port, 192.168.0.1 (I'm getting into deep water here!)

The 62.253. etc. address will be the WAN address. You need to check this a
few times - after your connection has disconnected and you have
re-connected - to see whether it's always the same.

If you don't feel confident to do too much digging, just leave OE running
and set it to check for new mail every 10 minutes. In the bit where it says
"If my computer is not connected at this time" select "Connect even if
working off-line". See whether that cures your problem.
