If I right click my Connection icon it always shows 2.2 Mbps speed. How do I
check the actual speed?

Which actual speed ? The speed you're connected at (see your router/modem
statistics) or the speed your typically useless ISP can deliver (run an online
speed test) ? These 2 are very much NOT the same thing in most cases.

Try this link to the BT test - it works with 'any' 11 number sequence that
begins with '0', and doesn't require all that faffing about logging on etc,
etc.

It appears that my speed is 1.8 Mbps which is slower than the 2.2 Mbps
shown. Of course I was promised up to 8Mbps via Orange!

Mbps and the shown figure was 2.2 Mbps
Orange stated that I could receive up to 8Mbps!

I don't find that one any use.
It drags like a fish in treacle until it's half-way, then suddenly zips to
the end and gives a 1.5Mb speed.
I'm just about to leave Eclipse- and I know that the bastards have knocked
my speed down to less than 0.5Mb. The BT one consistently shows about
0.38Mb - which is correct.
I used to get between 3.5 - 4.5 Mb with Eclipse, never got red flagged for
over use, yet they've throttled my speed almost to extinction. The
bastards!
It's enta from next week - so I hope to regain a normal speed.
BTW, when I was looking around for a new supplier I learned that Tiscali
have now got their grubby fingers in the Eclipse pie - is this correct?
What is certain is that Eclipse are now using Tiscali to route my
connection, which probably explains why it's so desperately slow.
Can't wait for the switch-over.

profile would be around 2Mbps on that, and that would give you about
1.8Mbps of actual data flow. Yor ISP is doing the best it can under the
conditions.
Nothing you can do if the line length/noise will only support 2.2Mbps.
How far from the exchange are you? Does you router give any stats?

Less polite posters than myself might respond "what part of 'up to'
don't you understand?"
I would simply say there is a view in the consumer protection
industry that ISPs should try harder to give a more realistic prediction
of actual speeds. Probably easier said than done.

I plugged my postcode into a postcode checker, and it gave me an
estimated 2.9Mgps. I get a 3Mbps BRAS.if I care to suffer a few more
disconnects I could tune that up to 3.5Mps.
As far as I am concerned I get a good deal for the money, and about what
I expected - a shade more actually.
I use the net more than I ever used a car. It costs about 1/10th of what
running a car does.
Unless I am pulling down huge stuff, the speed is already faster than
the servers can deliver a complex web page, or my computer can render it.

The 2.2 Mbps will doubtless be the synch speed in which case an actual 1.8Mbps
