ISP recomendation please
Posted by PeterT on April 1st, 2008

Hi,

Can anyone suggest an ISP that will give me the following?

1 Month contract
No upfront fee
No router required, will provide my own.
Small monthly download limit - probably around 2 Gig

I'm considering Plusnet, but would like a few more options if possible

Are you expecting to get an e-mail account from them too? For example
Onetel gives adequate (but no better) internet access but their e-mail
service is <expletive deleted> and their DNS servers are no better.

No-one in their right mind will offer free activation of a "new" line
with a 1 month contract, unless their monthly charge is inflated to
cover their costs.

Apparently Plusnet offer a 1 month contract with no upfront charge
(providing you use your own router), and you stay with them for 12
months.

Yes we do. Just to be clear though, the activation is charged should you
leave within the first 12 months.

Which is another way of saying either you pay for activation (but not up
front) or it is a 12-month minimum term. Semantics.

In what way is that wrong? I ask becuase you seem to imply that there is
something wrong with doing so. It seems to me that Plusnet are being quite
open about the terms which more than can be said for many other ISP's that
try and conceal terms in a mass of fine print. In any case the commercial
reality is that offering contracts of less than a year are simply
uneconomic. That does not stop some ISPs doing so but they are not likely to
remain in business for long.

Not quite: a 12 month contract would hit you for all outstanding monthly
payments as well as the activation fee if you left early.

No one implied there was anything wrong with the deal. They were
