ISP with static IP
Posted by Don Carter on July 25th, 2005

Finally get out of AOHell in September and am looking to transfer to
an iSP with static IP addresses. I know about Demon, but rumour has
it that they're not accepting transfers.

Any recommendations?

Don

Metronet, 1 is free then you pay if you want more.
3month contract.

Personally been very pleased.

Plusnet do not offer fixed IP's on the 'Broadband Plus' range of
products however.

The £25 Demon homeoffice with static ip does accept transfers. Only the
19.99 cheap and cheerful demon home doesnt, and that is dynamic ip anyway.

You can check with demon but I'm fairly sure the above is correct.

While that's true, if you use a router it will stick to the same IP even
after reboot or powercut.
But if you want to be sure sign up for the Premier account which is still
good value at £21.99.
If you do sign up with Plus.Net please use my ID 'wester' as a referrer and
save me few pence,
thanks, regards,
Martin

Most DHCP implementations allow continual renewing of leases,

features will depend on their infrastructure and policies.

But you will still have an IP address that will be designated as being part
of a dynamic pool and as such may well be in the sorbs database.

There is a huge difference between a fixed IP address and one that "doesnt
change"

If you are lucky .... mine hasn't after several reboots whilst
attempting to set up VPN's.

The package is sold without fixed IP ... the practice might be
different, but the OP needs to be aware of the facts.

ZEN have been the best ISP I've ever had. Not the cheapest, but reliable and
static IP as standard!

a few tens of MB (albeit sluggishly, until 0100 when Broadband Plus gets
a shot of adrenalin :-) so for me, it seems overly negative. If someone
said 'unsuitable for a heavy binaries user' I'd agree, and think that's
a portion of the service which should be outsourced in the short (and
long) term, so Plus.Net can sort the servers out to handle text and
get rid of bugs affecting moderated groups, rather than worry what
sector of the userbase they can put in a straightjacket (either block
binary groups or all binaries news access for BB Plus, for example). A
cap of 40 GB might be an idea, too, wherever the binaries come from, and
if necessary a cap on speed (eg treble the speeds that BB Plus users get)
so that paying an external news service won't be "out of the question".
