Looking for broadband package for parents.
Posted by zeebop on August 17th, 2005

Hi,

I'm looking for a broadband package for my parents.

I see Plusnet do a £15 a month one. Any reliable £10 packages?
As you can imagine they wont need anything above 256k or 512k at most.
A monthly cap also shouldnt be an issue.

Thanks

zeebop.

Packages from £11.75 (inc VAT) with included Mb's then pay 0.235p per MB
after that.

Customer services is good (or appears to be) and there online site *works*

Had similar problem - just signed the wrinklies up to Ukonline 512k service
£9.99 ( they could get the 8mb service) but dammed if i'm gonna pay for
8mb when i can only get 2mb at my exchange

only helps i guess if your are in Ukonlines LLU catchment area

Thanks for all your replies.

Looks like if I want unmetered, I'm looking at £15.
I think if I go for a lower service I would prefer capped as opposed
to Pay as you Go. Metronet does look good though....

How about www.ndo.com? I just got my 2mb and there and its pretty sweet..r

NTL 1meg broadband is £9.99 for one year, by which time the prices will
either remain at that and that speed, or increase in speed but for similiar
price, as I imagine they'll be light users.

I'd go with NTL for now due to that excellent offer! If you find a better
deal after a while there's nothing to stop them moving elsewhere, but as i
say the market will change *significantly* in the next year so they'd get
the cheap offer, and more afterwards. Yippee!

Apologies, didn't read properly; for your parnets you wouldn't need an
uncapped service, surely?

They could download plenty per day with allowances available by NTL,
plusnet, and other companies.

please dont consider plusnet if you want excessive wait times for cs and
days before they answer any tickets

This 'wrinkly' doesn't understand the logic behind that. We oldies have
way more time than you young folk..no salaried entertainment to go to,
just please ourselves all day. lol Okay, we may not be interested in
downloading the up to the minute recordings of the latest 'beat combo'
<g> , but we have way more time to download and try out oodles of
different software etc.

The potential is obviously there - but as another 'wrinkly', I have been on
PlusNet PAYG for several months after downgrading from Easy Start - and I
haven't yet once exceeded the basic included 1GB. [I look like I just might
this month because I have had equipment trouble and have consumed a lot of
bandwidth running speed tests to check whether it is working properly].

Within my 1GB I do quite a lot of browsing - and watching streaming video
news items on BBCi as well as a lot of (text) NG access and a fair few
emails.

I have found PlusNet pretty good and reliable despite adverse comments from
a few people. For £14.99 per month, you've got a choice between Plus and
PAYG. Plus is uncapped, but is missing a few features and quite heavily
throttled at busy times. Maybe it should be called Minus? PAYG is what I
would recommend for the OP's parents unless there is any reason why they are
likely to be heavy users. Extra GB's can be had for a quid or so, or the
uncapped Premier service costs £21.99

As you probably know, PlusNet has a referral feature whereby you can save a
few bob off your monthly subscription if someone joins on your
recommendation. If anyone is thinking of joining, you could do worse than to
quote my referral code of 'mills37'

Sounds good. But should you update your nick?

The PAYG sounds ok - but I am really wary of my parents getting a
surprise bill of more than £15 just because they accidently left some
streaming video on all night or somethign equally weird.

A predictable bill would give me peace of mind. And to be honest I
think they pay about £15 a month in surftime dial-up costs, so I
reckon I can stretch to it.

As a side note, am I the only one getting fed up with the myriad of
various broadband offerings these days?

I mean - whats wrong with offering 2MB and 8MB, capped or uncapped.
God - that would make things so much more straight-forward?

I mean whats with all the 'limited service' 'lower contention' 'off
peak only' 'web and email only' 'up to the first 1GB' 'non-intensive'
'non-this' 'non-that' clauses and contracts everyone offers?

Its as though half the sites describe the packages so that non-pc
literate users can understand them, but leave out the detail so us
pc-literate users who actually choose the services for everyone cant
understand whats going on!

ARGHHH!!!

the 9.99 deal mentioned is only for cable... if you're outside their cabled
areas they suggest their other brand... Virgin.net ADSL... and they use a
service from BT, called DataStream, which means they manage the connection
supporting a number of users from each exchange (so unless they already serve
the [parents'] exchange, they won't be available 'just yet', and anyway, their
Virgin.net service is capped. See <http://mywebpages.org/Broadband-2005.html>

Metronet's service is good (I've used it myself) but the sactivation cost of
69.95 pounds is something to consider and at the lowest speed, will only allow
400 MB of traffic before the charges increase. With the Autumn launch of the
BBC's new media player/service so might not go far - I donwload up to 2 GB a
day if I watch a couple of films from CinemaNow.com, or view some webcams.

Any 'free' activation will have some fee payable if they choose to cancel or
switch within a year [but one aspect of the Plus.Net service is that they only
reduce the activation cost by 20% for each year, so they would want 40+VAT if
someone left in months 13-24, 30+VAT for leaving in months 25-36 and so on ],
but their service works well (I'm on the Broadband Plus 14.99 uncapped a/c,
and while they have traffic shaping affecting USENET and peer-to-peer the
speed for browsing, streaming audio, downloading podcasts, etc really aren't
affected one bit. My firewall reported speed of 249 kB/s - the fastest I've
seen - when downloading some MP3s from podcast.com and apple.com. and I can
view webcams from Boston Univ at staggering speeds... 150+ kB/s for example
from <http://www.bu.edu/alumni/cam/lse/large.html> )

bear in mind that some "capped" services are not capped at all, but
charge for data after you go over the "cap". So they are PAYG really
or "inclusive data" is perhaps the most accurate.

For example BT Broadband Basic
"If you go over 1GB charges will apply as follows: £4 for the more
than 1GB, £8 for more than 3 GB, £12 for more than 6 GB."

Metronet's PAYG does at least cap the cost.
