Microfilter Question
Posted by Al on September 3rd, 2003

Evening all.

I'm investigating ADSL for my sister (on cable myself) and am wondering
about the operation of the filters.

Would I be correct in thinking that the combined phone and ADSL signal (for
want of a better expression) are present throughout the phone line
(including extensions) in the house and that the purpose of fitting a filter
is so that the modem/phone can be plugged into the appropriate socket to
receive the signal necessary for phone or ADSL use.

If I have not expressed myself very well scenario is thus.

BT phone line enters house.
Cabling taken to other sockets around the house with no phone plugged into
the master socket.
Cabling is in series format - loops around from one socket to next rather
than separate run from master socket.

If I fit a splitter on each extension socket can I plug phone and ADSL modem
it any extension of choice (obviously only one modem operating at any
time)and receive the same service as if I had plugged it into the master
socket.

Sorry if this is confusing.

TIA

Alan

absolutely. So you need a microfuilter on every phone/fax/sky
box/modem to keep the ADSL signal out of it. You can plug the aDSL
modem in to any socket and it doesn't *need* a microfilter (it has
internal filtering) but can be plugged into one if its more
convenient.

On a related topic, when I had my ADSL installation I was warned about monitored alarm
systems, like the one I have from British Gas.

As I had a second phone line (and the alarm system is on the first phone line) I wasn't
too bothered, although my original intention had been to drop the second line.

But in conversation with some mates in Canada, they tell me there's no reason I can't have
British Gas come in and install a filter on the alarm system, and save me the cost of the
second line.

I haven't approached BG about this yet, but I intend to. Anybody have experience with
this?

Cheers
Steve T

I had heard that but apparantly it only applies to new recare
installations. I would guess that BT have some new equipment they are
installing now that can be used with ADSL lines.
