- MicroFilters
- Posted by Geoff Lane on September 10th, 2003
Not as yet having broadband I would like to ask something about
microfilters.
I know they seperate voice from data traffic but if all computers were
switched off could the telephone just use a normal phone socket or
would it still need to be connected through a filter.

If your ADSL service is not active you can use a phone without a
filter, but why go to all the trouble of unplugging all the filters
when you have to replace them back in the sockets when you want to use
the DSL service again??

The filters would still be needed to remove the high frequency ADSL
signal from the exchange, even if your modem is unplugged. Since a
telephone neither needs nor generates signals in this frequency range,
there is nothing to lose by leaving the filter in place.

What high frequency signals??????
Hint.........
If the modem is unplugged/turned off the DSL exchange equipment parks
itself until it detects the presence of the Modem again, hence the
DSL signal is turned off so no filtering is required...
Now I agree with that....

The modem signals to the equipment at the exchange - not the other way
around..
Therefore as long as the modem is switched off or disconnected - the OP will
be able to make his voice calls on an unfiltered line without a problem.

Interesting. I don't doubt what you say. However I was enabled for ADSL whilst
away on holiday. I was in no doubt on my return that I had been, I picked up the phone
and it was hissing away. At this stage my ADSL Router and filters were still packed
in a box !

In my eyes, he has more credibility than most. Just because you *have*
ADSL doesn't mean you know all about it, either. But working for BT as
an engineer (right, Kraftee?) gives one a certain clue.

Argh but I play with far more than just the one circuit in a week
(minimum of 4 maximum of at least 20 per week) & normally after the
end user has reported a fault. So infact I most probably have more
fault finding experience with DSl than you will ever have.
Try lurking before attempting to use a cheap shot, ok..
By the way (sorry to bore everybody else) the reason I haven't got DSL
is because I (that's right me) failed my own line test (done whilst I
was commissioning my local exchange) & when you can't get DSL & you
can get a CM service you don't have much of a choice...
Happy now...
