Modem loses sync on Sundays
Posted by Paperbag Writer on December 6th, 2004

I have a strange problem with my ADSL connection, every Sunday around mid
day my alcatel modem loses sync with the exchange for 1-2 hours. This only
happens on Sundays, the rest of the week I get a very reliable connection
with no real problems at all. I have contacted my ISP and I am having
difficulty getting past the scripted replys and auto responses, I have
tried all of the usual things- changing filters, making sure nothing else
is connected to the line unfiltered, rebooting and re installing drivers,
the list goes on but it's safe to say that no stone has been left unturned
my end. It's pretty obvious that the problem lies at the BT end and I was
wondering if there is a number or other way of contacting BT directly to at
least find out if my exchange is experiencing problems rather than waiting
in a call Q for half an hour to speak to someone half way across the world
who can't find the answer on his script?

Sorry but as you are your ISP's customer (not BT) you have to go thru them.

Are you sure that you've checked everything at your end, including time
switches or anything else which could produce electrical noise?

All I can say with certainty is that I'm very glad I'm not going to have to
fix this one....

I thought as much.

Yep, there is nothing on a timer or anything that is set up to come on any
differently on a sunday, I also have a mains filter to all my PC gear (I've
even tried eliminating this too) I have also unplugged everything that
connects to the phone line when the problem occurs. The outage usually
lasts at least an hour before the modem re-syncs so it doesn't look like
its anything spiking it thats causing the problem. I really need to find
out if anyone else locally is experiencing similar problems.

As an engineer, all be it not in that line of work, I too am glad it's not
my job to find this one either.
Thanks.

Something is happening at this time, if it only happen on Sundays.

Start looking for a pattern.

A church, Radio Ham, Neibour etc...

Talk to your neibours, find out if anyone else is having a problem.

When the clocks went back the other week, did the fault time change by one
hour ?

That's why socket jockeys are coining it in whilst the people who are trying

That was my thinking, you know what the old timer HF net's are like on a
Sunday...

and it could be very hard to prove, or even start to prove..

I don't know anyone else nearby who is a radio ham or anyone else with ADSL
in my street but I'll ask around. Could the problem be down to some kind of
contention at the exchange maybe?
I have only had this problem for the last five weeks or so, when It dropped
this week it went off at exactly 12-00 mid day and back on just after 13-00
and then it droped again briefly in the afternoon for a few mins. I'm going
to watch it very carefully to see if the times match this comming Sunday.

Most radio amateurs can't afford equipment capable of transmitting the
permitted legal power output. Or erect aerials high enough anyway.

And interference to Internet services, if it should occur, is always due to
Internet equipment picking up legal radio signals which it is not licensed
to receive. Or not conforming to European regulations governing immunity of
sensitive electronic equipment to interference.

But interference from, and between, computing equipments is by far the
greatest source of trouble. It's supposed to come under the Regulations.
That's why ferrite slugs are clamped over power leads and signal cables.
They are intended to suppress radiation of interference from connecting
leads but they don't and are hopefully fitted mainly because they might.

No. Contention will show up as a drop in through put. You should never see a
loss of sync with the exchange DSLAM equipment as a rule of thumb. Only
time would be if BT are working on your line or the exchange DSLAM
equipment.

Report back with your findings.

Don't get me wrong, ( I'm a ham myself ) I'm not saying anyone is doing any
thing thay shouldn't, but this could be a source of the problem, or the
place to get some help tracking the true source down. If it only started 5
weeks ago it's unlikely to be a ham away, but worth checking out... Please
don't go in guns blazing "YOUR INTERFERING WITH MY BROADBAND !" Be polite
and ask for help, explain your problem and you are likely to get all the help
you need. I've had this myself with TVI on neibours TV sets, nothing to do
with the lift conditions at the time or the fact their TV antenna was
hanging by a thread !!! They see the "big" antennas dotted around the house
and work out in their minds it must be the ham. (or CB'er).

When dealing with this type of problem before, and working with the RFI team
from Marlsham we have tracked the problem to all sorts of things such as for
example:

Outside PIR floodlight,
Shop front lighting,
Street light
Welding equipment
Fish tank pump
Christmas lights

Getting the BT RFI team involved is one option, but all other things have to
be checked first. It's takes weeks of visits to go down this road.

GBP. Please forward 10% for my divine intervention.
