which modem/router - adsl ????
Posted by lee on September 30th, 2003

Afternoon all.

Im looking at getting adsl and have come to a stop. Im not sure which isp
to use and which hardware to get. I have looked at:
BT
pipex
Demon
Zen
Bulldog etc any good or bad points anyone??? I do want to run VPN over it
and use newsgroups.

On the hardware side i've looked at:
D-Link DSL-604+
Solwise SAR-715PVW
Draytek Vigor 2600we
some has said to look at Netgear DG834 but as i've seen on here its new and
now one has any yet. I would like to have wireless but could go for it
later. I needs to have SPI firewall, IDS, logging and be able to do VPN
from it to other vpn device although pass though would do if it comes to it.

Any help appreciated

Regards

Lee

I think the Netgear DG834 is new, so I'd also be interested in opinions
of it, as it seems to be "all-in-one" box.

You'd be better of getting an adsl wireless with 4 port switch straight from
the start. I have Zen as an ip and the Lioncom adsl wireless. Had the
D-Link but it wouldn't go through more than 1 wall. I understand the Vigor
is good. Pass on VPN don't know this.

Lioncom adsl 4 port router, Nildram adsl running on Redhat 7.3. You can see
and hear me and my pal Joe Longthorne on uktalent.org.

As usual Tiny Ramsden recommends Lioncom omitting to mention that HE is
Lioncom !

Draytek Vigor has VPN support.

Use the VPN all the time to manage servers at werk.

back order or pre order and Netgear still only have the DG814/824
listed on their web site.

I bought Netgear DM602 and DG614 and it was a nightmare. The software didn't
load or unload, the hardware
didn't work either, support (in India) was useless. Wasted days before
returning it.
The DG834 is the same thing in one box. (Perhaps they worked on it a bit ?)
But read the posts here and on alt.internet.wireless: loads of people having
trouble updating the firmware and searching for old working versions.
Buyer beware.

Martin

I have had flawless performance with *MY* DG614 for 6 months! This includes
several firmware updates. I would certainly buy the 834.

The 834 certainly needs everything I need, so I may well
be purchasing it as soon as I can

Doesn't seem to be a DG834 on the Netgear website, unless I missed it.
Do you have a link?

Regards their "all-in-one" units, I installed a DG824M at my sister's
house a while back, which is an ADSL modem, router and 802.11b access
point all in one box, and it works like a charm, very impressed with it.

It's so brand new that it isn't quite out in the UK yet!!! If you type DG834G
into google you will find some reviews there.

i have the usr 9003, about £80 from ebuyer.co.uk.
It has a built in firewall, 1 usb and 2 10/100 ethernet ports.
You can just plug it in, set your dialup settings and connect as DHCP is set
as default and the firewall is already configured automatically for
browsers,email,netmeeting etc.
It uses something called ALG or Advanced Level Gateway which automatically
allows these standard apps to function.
If you need to open a port for incoming, then you go to firewall and add a
rule.
It seems to have everything you could expect-NAT, port mapping, DHCP,
Bridging, RIP.
I have had it connected for over 2 weeks without a problem.
The documentation could be better. It explains how to set it up ok, but it
doesn't go into detail about what you are actually setting.
Two people i know have had problems with the Netgear router with lock-ups.
Every so often they have had to power off/on to reset it. sorry, i don't
know the model, but its small and silver and looks quite nice!
Rob.

Why does it need firmware updates ? Are they using the punters to test their
stuff ?
I have done my bit, thanks for the experience, but Never again !
