Modem/Router recommendation?
Posted by james on November 3rd, 2006

My Linksys Wag54G has finally died a death - I stopped using the wireless on
it ages ago as it was poor, and I use a separate D-Link WAP now, but last
night the LAN ports seem to have failed on it too!

Anyway, so I need a new ADSL modem/router... There are plenty of really
cheap ones around at ebuyer etc. but I need one that will act as a VPN
endpoint (ipsec tunnel) for my link to the office, and most of the really
cheapies seem to only offer passthrough.

Any recommendations? I don't have loads of money, so I can't really stretch
to a Draytek etc, and doing a quick search, it seems even netgears and stuff
are up to the 80 quid mark...

I ended up with the dsl-g624t as I needed multiple vpn passthrough
ability instead of the end point but the link one above does end point.

The cheap linksys vpn ones seem to be very flaky from reviews ive read
and seem to wait a long time for firmware roll outs to get them stable -
not good especially considering they are in cisco's family, you'd expect
far better pre-release testing but this doesnt seem to be the case.

Ive just bought 4 of the dlink dsl-g624t to trial on some small remote
sites - I used to use dlink products years ago and they used to
generally be standard stable product, im hoping they have continued that
tradition.

James:
You will find Vigor 2600 on Ebay at very reasonable prices, and as they are
dead reliable it's safe to buy second hand, that's I got both of mine.

I have to agree with Martin.
Sooner have a 2nd user Draytek off ebay than a "toy" router from netgear,
Lynksys.....etc

I have bought many 2nd user Drayteks and continue to do so

The D-Link DSL-G624M is currently (one-day only offer) available for
£42.22 from Scan, and a few quid dearer from eBuyer. I've ordered one
and hopefully I will soon be able to tie a brick to my Speedtouch 330
and drop it in the nearest deep pond...
