Modem use on BT broadband line.
Posted by jturner1990 on January 15th, 2006

Hello,

I want to know if it is possible that my 56k dialup modem can be still
used over a BT phone-line that has BT broadband (i.e., a telephone line
with BT's microfilter attached but obviously using the voice line not
the broadband modem part of the line)?

Thanks,
Jason

Yes this should definitely be possible. I've kept my dial-up modem
connected, partly as a backup in case broadband ever goes down, partly so I
can log into a different ISP is I ever want to access my web space as an
"outsider" if there's ever a problem with DNS, and partly so I can use the
modem for sending faxes. Make sure you scan the computer (eg using AdAware)
for rogue diallers which could dial premium-rate numbers - as you would for
any modem that's still connected to a phone line.

Blimey that was quick! Thanks Jono.

Without offending you, how sure are you about this?

Thanks,
Jason

In response to what Adrian <anca@bigfoot.com> posted in

And it can be used at the same time - you can have 2 simultaneous internet
connections.

Because dial-up modems, fax machines and Sky digiboxes uses the voice side of
the phone line, unlike broadband, and why all those should be plugged into the
filtered side (phone side) of the filter.

completely 100%.

Analog modems operate using identical signals to telephones. Since you
can still use your phone (obviously!!), you can still use your analog
modem.

And that's not just theoretical - several of us (including me) who have
posted to this thread in the various groups that it's been opened in, have
actual practical *experience* that dial-up still works after the line has
had ADSL activated on it - and for me, at least, it works at the same speed
that it used before activation.

What more confidence or reassurance do you need than this?

Thus spaketh Martin Underwood:
Worked at the same speeds for me too the time I was on ADSL, between 48,000
and 53,333.

Yes

You can have two internet connections at the same time on one PC using ADSL
and Dialup, I have done it many times.

It's also good for sending a FAX as you can't with ADSL only dialup.

Take a tip, dont have it connected when not using it as one day you may get
a rouge dialer and not know it and cost you a lot of money.

Certainly it can. I am doing just that here as my ADSL line was
originally used for a BBS which is still running (at the moment, anyway,
but I'm soon to close it down). That BBS can be accessed via POTS *and*
telnet, all on the same BT line.
