Moving house but keeping number
Posted by alfi on April 14th, 2004

I am moving house on friday and keeping the same number. The house is
just down the road. Will the broadband move with it uninterupted?

No. The existing ADSL service will be cancelled - its linked to your
physical location, not just the number used.

You will have to reorder ADSL from your ISP.. and there may be a delay of a
couple of days until you can do that as BT's records may show that ADSL is
present on your telephone number, until they have been updated with the fact
that you have moved location.

Talk to your ISP.

And assuming that ADSL will be available at the new location. I know some
streets that have ADSL at one end, and no ADSL at the other!

I do not know how it is with your ISP, but you may want to look into this:

AOL for example: If you have ADSL on a 12 month contract, but move house
before the end of contract you have to pay the remainder of the contract
fees - even if you still go with AOL for ADSL at the new address, or
another ISP as it is a new address - it is a new ADSL contract.

Just done the same thing.

ADSL is cancelled on the old house and you have to reapply at the new
house.

You will probably be with out ADSL for 2 to 3 weeks.

With my move it took BT 1 week to sort the phone out, and I now I have
been able to reapply for ADSL again. This should take 2 weeks.

BT had a problem with moving my line as although I had informed PIPEX
I wanted to cancel my ADSL account, PIPEX managed to lock my BT
account such that BT couldn't release the number for the new house.
Eventually BT managed to get the PIPEX connection removed so the
number could be moved.

Good luck!

Matt
