Netgear 834G ethernet connection problem
Posted by redrun7 on October 31st, 2006

After long procrastination, I successfully managed to set up a wireless
network using a Netgear 834G wireless router. The main home PC was
connected via the ethernet connection, with the kids's PC upstairs
working via wireless. The installation was clunky, since I'm no expert,
but after about four hours I got it working and - hey, brilliant.

A month later, there is a very frustrating problem. I think someone has
tried to connect via the old BT Voyager connection and failed, and
somehow or somewhere the main PC settings have changed, so that the
ethernet connection is no longer recognised.

The upstairs PC works fine by wireless, but the main PC does not. I
can't get an internet connection from the main PC. The ethernet port
light on the router comes on when the main PC is re-booted, but then
switches off once it has fired up. That tells me that the ethernet
cable is OK, and that the router is fine, but somewhere the settings on
the main PC have changed so that it is blocking out the ethernet
connection.

Strangely, when I check the connection status on the main PC, it
confirms that ADSL is connected, but I just can't get onto it.

Grrrrr. I have tried the various set-up assistants to no avail, and
checked out the modem and internet options, but fear I may have made
the problem worse. I don't know if these should be set to manual or
not. Not sure if there is a firewall problem, default set wrongly
somewhere or modem identification issue.

Any advice would be appreciated. Many thanks !

First thing I'd do is remove the voyager entirely from the PC - uninstall
drivers and unplug the modem.
Also, in Internet Explorer, select Internet Options from the Tools menu then
click the connections tab. Remove all entries under 'Dial-up and Virtual
Private Network settings'

You coud then click the Setup button on the same connections tab. Click
Next, 'Connect to the Internet', Next, 'Set up my connection manually',
Next, 'Connect using a broadband connection that is always on', Next,
Finish. Close Internet Explorer and then relaunch.

Many thanks. I'll give that a whirl tonight.

Your last para is inconsistent. Since the ethernet port on the router goes
out, your connetion between router and PC has failed.

What do you mean by "connection status on the main PC" ? Since it cannot
connect to the router, how does it know anything about the ADSL status?
This must be the BT Voyager connection.

Unplug and discard the BT Voyager, and remove ALL the related software.
Reboot

Connect the PC to the router.

Open a command window, type:
ipconfig /all
and report what you see - specifically, whether the PC has values for its IP
address, DNS Server, and default gateway.

When we can see that report, we can advise further.
