Netgear DG834G Wireless configuration question.
Posted by cerberus@address.invalid on November 20th, 2005

WEP configuration has three choices for authentification.

automatic
opensystem
shared key

'open system' and 'shared key' are explained in the manual.

The help on the config *web page* says:
"Authentication Type
Normally this can be left at the default value of "Automatic." If that
fails, select the appropriate value - "Open System" or "Shared Key."
Check your wireless card's documentation to see what method to use."

AFAICT there is no explanation of 'automatic' in the manual on the CD.
Anyone care to explain what 'automatic' does?

I would assume that means it automatically decides which to use,
dependent on which system the computers accessing it use (they must
all be the same, I believe).

But you should only be using WEP if you have computers in the network
that cannot use WPA, as WPA is much stronger security.

Thanks, I have set it to 'shared key'. And PCs' wireless cards set to
Shared mode authentication.

WPA with 98SE and Belkin F5D7000(version indeterminate w.r.t. to
Belkin support site), installed with Australian drivers (as came out
of the box bought in UK), at least they're at the latest level, so
says Belkin's support site. I could download the European version
but as it is working I'll leave it alone.

See
http://web.belkin.com/support/downlo...9&lang=1&mode=
for the source of my confusion.

If you know how to WPA working on the above I would be grateful for
any clues.

I don't think Windows before XP supports WPA, but there's a free utility
here to enable WPA support:

http://www.wirelesssecuritycorp.com/...PAAssistant.do

Also says that the driver requires WPA support. Try it and see if it
works.

Thanks Phil, looks promising. That just leaves the Belkin driver
problem. There are different drivers for different OS' and the
current 98SE / Australian driver does not offer an option to set WPA.
So I would have to take a chance on trying to install the XP driver.
And I'll bet it won't install. I'll have to think about it.
