- Netgear router wont block websites
- Posted by du@hotmail.com on January 23rd, 2005
I have a Netgear DG834G wireless router and have it connected to just
my one computer via an ethernet cable. I have been trying to block
websites just to see how the feature would work if i had more than one
pc connected to it but the problem is no matter how i add websites or
keywords to be blocked i can still access the sites that have been
added and applyed to the block list.
Has anyone with this router been able to restrict sites viewed on it
or is there something else that i have missed. I have 'everyday'
ticked in the schedule menu and don't see why this feature is not
working.
Thanks in advance.
du.

Not ideal, but in the interim, how about setting up a hosts file on each
machine ?

changes to happen?

Sorry for my intrusion
I have also a netgear router Dg 834, but without wireless option. Last week,
because my cordless phone is broken it, I have bought another one. I have
bought a siemens Gigaset A140 and last one was a cordless binatone. Every
time that I make or recevie a call my adsl lose the connection. Often, but
not ever, during this calls the router can't able to restabilish the
connection, just when the call ends the connection come back ok. Other times
the router during the call is able to reconnect, but when the call ends the
connection fall out, and after some minutes come back all right.
What can I do???
Do I have to change my phone?
Or is there some special filters?
Thank you at all in advance.

Yes, you need a micro filter for each phone.

Are good places to look (with thanks to the people in the thread above
who gave me these links).
You can also replace the master socket for one with built in filters if
you feel adventurous - see above links again.

Thank you at all.
Yes it is a filter, because I haven't a filter in the plug where connect my
phone.
But in the box where there is the router there is also a filter, and
actually I have connected my phone there, and now everything work fine.
I'm sorry for my english, but as I sayed in a last post, I'm italian.
Thanks a lot.
bye

I have seen the filters, but I have another doubt. The phone/adsl cable have
a first box where externally there is the phone plug, and internally there
is a derivation for the dsl cable that link to the router. Between this
derivation and the router, there is a filter, where is possible to connect
the cable of the router.
Which type of filter I have to buy?
My landlord said me that there is a special filter that is useful for me,
and I have to pay attention when I will buy it.

I have something similar. There is a short lead with a plug at one end
that goes into the master socket and at the other end there is a small
plastic box with a socket for the telephone and another for the router.
In mine the filter is actually built into the small plastic box.
If you plug this lead directly into the master socket (i.e. do not use
a filter) and then plug your telephone and router into the two sockets
at the other end then all should be well.
If you have extension sockets that you use for a telephone then you
will need to buy a filter like this:
http://www.clarity.it/telecoms/adsl_bits.htm with a reference
ADSL/MICROF1 £8.00
Or you can go to:
http://www.adsl-filters.co.uk/ where any of the three filters will work.
Some are better than others, I don't know if anybody else will make a
recommendation?

If I buy the first one and connect just the plug of the telephone, leaving
the adsl cable connected inside the box on the wall, I will have problems?
Because the router is in another room far from the box about two meters,
where there are also the connections of the house's LAN, and here there is
also a filter, where actually I have linked the phone. But in this location
I have to put in the phone's basament the on the floor.

You should only use a filter on the telephone, NOT on the ADSL
connection.
The Clarity PRO microfilter has one BT-style socket (filtered, for
telephony equipment) and one RJ11 socket (unfiltered, for ADSL
equipment). So if you get one of these and plug it into an extension
socket then you can plug a 'phone into the (filtered) 'phone socket and
your ADSL modem into the (unfiltered) RJ11 socket. If the computer is
plugged in somewhere else then that's fine just leave the RJ11 socket
empty.
I am losing track of your wiring arrangements so I hope this makes
sense :-)

I am using Win 2k, but I don't think that affects it. I do set up the
network addresses and DNS servers manually both in Windows and the
router. Not sure if this has any bearing on the matter. Maybe others can
comment on that aspect.
The only other thing that occurs is the schedule. Is it set to everyday?

It happens that David G formulated :
It also works with my DG834G. I have just tried it blocking 'yahoo'.
Any Yahoo URL produces a red and black webpage from the router advising
that the site has been blocked by the router.
