Networking using a NetGear DG834G Modem/Router
Posted by Paul on January 3rd, 2004

Hi

My exchange is going ADSL wef 11.02.2004 and I've already placed my advanced
order through Pipex - Solo2Go Extreme 1mbs service. I expect that all
systems will be go therefore from about the end of Feb.

In the mean time I've ordered my equipment and I've read up a lot about
configuring it.

I have already ordered a combined wireless ADSL Modem/Router and nics etc
and my question is - Can I set it up in the meantime without an ADSL
telephone connection in order that I can get my network of about 4 PC's
working? ie; do the network functions operate independently of the modem?
and will it mess up the connection to broadband if I do?

I have bought the NetGear DG834G - two PC's will be hardwired and two
wirelessly

TIA

I got the same combination of Pipex 1Mb and DG834G in November and I'm
well pleased and satisfied. Don't upgrade the firmware to 1.03 just
yet as you may crash the router.......

FWIW I took delivery of a DG834G on 30th December and flashed it to 1.0.3

for me whatsoever. They do advise against doing the upgrade wirelessly so
heed that advice.

Apparently, some people on this ng have had their routers lock out
even when doing a wired upgrade. Broadbandbuyer have obviously had
some routers returned as they advise not upgrading in any fashion
until further notice.

Perhaps you were lucky but I don't want to risk being without my
router for a couple of weeks.....

just figure Netgear must have released the upgrade for a reason (plenty
listed on theor website) and if there were serious problems then Netgear
would have pulled or amended the release quickly enough.

This is my first experience of implementing a wireless network and even
though I saw the warnings on the Broadbandbuyer site (I bought mine from
eBuyer) I thought "What the hell?" the upgrade is there so I might as well
take advantage of it. We all know the reputation Netgear has for releasing
products with an immediate need for updates and I didn't want to pratt about
with potential problems that the upgrade was designed to fix.

Perhaps I'm luckier than most that it all went well. Or perhaps there are a
few that are just unluckier than most. Either way, I wish everone else good
luck with their DG834g :-)

Thanks Filthy Rich

Over the week-end I looked into this piece of kit which I'd already ordered
and saw the reference to firmware update 1.03

I had proposed not to upgrade - now I definately will not until nearer the
time we go live and then only if it's necessary.

In the meantime the Router arrived at 12pm today - unpacked it - unplugged
and removed my Netgear 5 port hub (EN2005) which has now served it's
purpose - plugged in the cat5 connections - logged on to the Router - saw
that the router was configured with the same IP address as my main PC -
reconfigured my main PC - rebooted - switched on wife's PC (both hard wired
to Router) - and hey presto by 12-15pm I had a 100 mbps Network -
brilliantly quick.

Now that's what I call simple - Rock on................

Next job after tea is to setup my laptop to the network wirelessly, which
I'm sure will be even more simple. Then when I receive my wireless PCI
ethernet card I will connect up my daughters.

Just one question - I've noticed that even if I'm not transfering files
across the network the front ethernet port lights flash every 5 seconds or
so - is this correct? They are green, but I assumed that they should only
flash when files or other data is being transmitted/received. Or is this
the sensing of the wireless access point? I have temporarily turned
wireless access off in the router's configuration but the flashing continues
..

Could someone explain this phenomenon please

Cheers

The router has 5 ports which act as a bridge. Since you can
connect another switches over multiple ports you can create
a loop. What's happening is the switch is sending out BPDU's
looking for these loops. Google for "spanning tree", 802.1d
and/or possibly "bridge protocol data unit". You cannot turn
these off.

They also have reputation for releasing firmware fixes which introduce more
problems then they fix, and that's IF they work at all. Not to mention
selling PPPoE only kit in UK, and selling faulty new hardware !
You pays your money....

Martin

And we all know that your (frequently expressed) views on Netgear products are
*NOT* experienced by many many others - including myself - who get flawless
performance!

Thanks Bob

Spoke too soon re the wireless adapter for my LapTop - appears faulty, a
Belkin F5D7010uk, after installing the drivers, at the prompt to insert the
card, neither is it recognised after a reboot nor is the Power LED coming
on. My Laptop has 2 PCMCIA cards at present - a NetGear ethernet adapter
and a dialup modem, both of which work perfectly. The laptop is an old
Toshiba Satellite 220CS - can anyone confirm that it should be ok with the
Belkin please - my knowledge is lacking.

Cheers again

Try using the latest drivers from their website - sometimes the US drivers
work where the European ones don't...

If you have no luck, try Belkin's tech support line on 00800 2 2355460
(international freephone = 00800) - I imagine they can confirm if you have a
faulty one.

Also, once/if you get it all up and running, change the device manager
settings to "54g-Performance" under IBSS 54g mode for the Belkin card if you
have no 802.11b equipment on your network

Thanks Sunil - I think I'm getting somewhere now. Realised that I had to
change the BIOS settings to change from 16 bit to cardbus then the lights
came on.

However I'm having problems now installing the cardbus drivers - the laptop
doesn't have a cd-rom drive and I've lost my Windows 98 SE installation disk
which is repeatedly being asked for.

Still I know what the problem is now, so hopefully I can sort it out

Thanks for your tip - I will use it
