New To Broadband, What Do I Need
Posted by Martin on September 17th, 2007

Currently on dialup at £10 a month.Just got Sky satellite which offers their
base broadband for free which would be sufficient for my requirements.

I have two laptops and if Sky provides a router what does the laptop need to
receive the signals ?

Sorry if this sounds a daft question but I can't seem to find an explanation
to my question on the web.

Thanks.

Martin

Nothing if they are modern laptops with built in wireless, and Sky provide a
wireless router.
Else a couple of these for a retro-fit

Apart from the other answer, i'd also suggest reviewing your security
on both machines (anti-spyware / anti-virus / firewall*)

*the router will act as a natural firewall for incoming traffic, but
it's nice to know what's trying to get _out_ from the machines and
give you the ability to block it if required.

And you need to enable wireless security, otherwise anyone

My network is Cat5 wired, and I'm surrounded by unsecured
networks.

Interesting that you are surrounded by unsecured wifi connections, I have 6
in my area and all are secured.

I've got 5 all fully secured, 1 by the fact that Sky send their
routers out with it preconfigured (good job to) & the rest I had to
set up & hence put the security in place

I think it's Apple OS-X users that aren't/or haven't a clue
about securing their wireless connections.
Others just connect things up out of the box, and if it
connects, don't dig any deeper, on the principle "If it
ain't broke, don't fix it". It works, they are happy.
