NEWBIE Q: moving from freeserve
Posted by Ed on November 30th, 2003

I've had enough of freesereve and their outages, so after nearly 2 years I
would like to move on.

What happens with my modem (green alcatel speedtouch USB)? Can I use it with
my new ISP?

Which (non-cable) ISP is offering the cheapest 1mb access?

BT wrote to my friend and told him to stop downloading certain files, are
there any other ISP's that don't like P2P sharing/ bittorrent and that sort
of thing.

Thanks for all your help.
Ed.

Funnily enough I personally have had *NONE* of this. No outages at all - just
rock solid service at good data rates!

Depends if you bought it or got it "free" with a subscription. If you bought
it is is yours - and you can re-use it just fine. If if was provided free they
will want it back.

BTW Freeserve do not support "migration" to a new ADSL provider. You will have
to cancel with them before doing anything else.

I used to be the same as you, laughing while all my friends suffered
outages.
Now it takes me ages to get on, and can cut off just like that.

I bought it, I was one of the first to sign up with their broadband "trial"
when they started.

So I call them to cancel, and then what? Phone tiscali/pipex/whoever and
say.... "I have a modem, can i have the settings?"
Thanks, Ed.

In article <bqcjht$gc4$1@newsg2.svr.pol.co.uk>, ed@nospam.net says...
I thought that P2P had been declared legal? Bittorrent is actually one of
the supported methods of downloading Steam (the Valve Half Life game
"manager"),

FWIW, Plusnet don't support P2P on their cheap £18.99/month package. They're
fine with you doing it on the £21.99 package though.

Pete.

You need to phone Freeserve to cancel...they will attange for BT to remove
the ADSL equipment from your phone line. Then, once this is complete, phone
whoever you like to re-subscribe! They will arrange for you line to be
re-enabled but there WILL be a gap!

Many ISPs seems to be offering "free connection" and some will offer a better
deal if you have your own modem/router (which you do!)

I think it's probably to do with BT Broadband's daily download limit, and
they'll write to you if you exceed it too often.

I can`t see how they could - ftp is a perfectly legitimate reason for a
p2p connection to occur

It may depend which "bb" domain you're on.
Mine was bb2.freeserve.co.uk, IIRC, and I had no connectivity issues.
