What are the advantages of a fixed IP address?
(I assume that it is for businesses or real 'hardcore' on-line gamers)

Please enlighten me!

Thanks.

There are two main advantages.

The first is for those who want to host their own services - such as a
local web server, mail server or perhaps a game server. By having a fixed
(or static as it's more commonly known) IP address they are able to
simplify their configurations.

The second is for people working from home. A static IP address allows for
your connection to be authorised through firewalls and also for VPN
connections to be set up (VPN = virtual private network and is a means of
extendingthe private network to remote locations over an encrypted link
across an insecure network).

You don't need static IP for VPN; authorisation using login/password
over IPsec or PPTP works fine.

Yes, I should have stated that it's desirable rather than necessary.

Reality however is that many companies have less clue than you do and
don't know that or choose products that are less useful for this purpose.
