- newbie router question
- Posted by Kris on November 29th, 2003
Can 2 separate computers share an adsl line
using a router without the need for network cards
and separate adsl modems ?
If so how do they connect to the router / modem ?
... they are about 8 yards apart.

If your referring to a wired router (ie one that has a wire between
the router and the PC) then yes - the PCs would need a network card in
them to talk to the router.
Just the one ADSL modem would be required - whether this is inside the
router (an ADSL Router) or external (using something like a USB
Modem).
Other than that - your looking at getting a wireless router so that
you dont have wires between the router and PCs. But then you require
a card or USB device to send / recieve the signal to the router as
well.

You only need one ADSL modem, but I wouldn't bother trying to avoid the
use of network cards. They're very cheap, and by far the simplest and
most reliable way to set this up. Once you have such a system set up,
it's very easy to expand it to more than 2 computers.
Get a combined ADSL modem/router/firewall/hub (i.e. one with several
ethernet sockets on the back). Plug ADSL box into wall socket using
BT/RJ11 cable. Plug each computer into ADSL box via ethernet cables.
