News Groups in Outlook
Posted by Gareth :-\) voom on March 6th, 2004

Hi,

I am thinking of canning my current broadband provider (NTL) for BulldogDSL
which is x2 faster for the same price. The only problem is they don't
include news groups or email.

I get my email from another source anyway so I am not fussed about that but
I would like to continue using my newgroups in Outlook Express 6. Is there
any services that let you access news groups via Outlook for free or a small
fee?

I don't wanna use Google Groups, tried it before...I much prefer using it
via Outlook.

Cheers

http://news.individual.net/ is good but doesn't carry binaries.

Yes, use news.individual.net - it's free, and hosted by Berlin University.
You have to register at
http://news.individual.net , but it's fairly straightforward to set up.

I started using it when Freeserve's news server was playing Silly B's - but
stayed with it because it is independent of any ISP and makes it easier to
switch ISPs if you so wish.

Here's a web site which reviews news servers.
http://www.newsgroupservers.net/ Most of these are in the US but there is
a European list too.

I'm currently using Clara.net
http://www.uk.clara.net/homeaccess/claranews.php which provides a range of
services depending on usage.

All of these news servers can be checked to see if they carry the newsgroups
you want before signing up.

For users with really low usage (but may need some binaries), Forte APN service is recommended. The measured plan is actually provided by Supernews and cheap enough.
http://www.forteinc.com/apn/index.php

I am using their 2GB plan which costs only 2.95 USD. The retention is great and the speed is acceptable while I connect it from HK.

But as the service is provided in US, the connection speed may not be as good as those usenet services provided inside UK.

news.individual.net for text groups only & Astraweb for
binaries (they do a pay-as-you-go service, 25GB for £10)

Thank you Ricco@X24 I have signed up to Forte APN. It's cheap enough and
seems to be working fine.

Bulldog do offer http://www.bulldogdsl.com/residential/mybulldog.asp as a
add-on but I don't know of many people on it and its probably cheaper to
"source" your own.

I use http://news.individual.net/ for text newsgroups and a ClaraNews
account (as described at http://www.uk.clara.net/btbroadband/)

As a sidenote, if you do order ADSL with Bulldog would you mind quoting my
referral code while ordering?

Its bdol 87431 - you can just quote it when ordering online or by telephone.

Sunil

Outlook Express is fine. Around 90% of newsgroup users use it.

Just because lots of people do something doesn`t make it the best way to
do things...

I would hazard a guess at saying close to that number also don`t use
Windows Update.

Does that make it right ?
