Looks like $3.95 now. What is the service like? Is it fast (for getting
new messages), and does it have authentication? (Meaning, could I use it
when I have the laptop on the road?)

Good service and yes can be used on more than one machine.

Retention in Binaries is a little erratic, speed is good. For a little
more oyu can have differnt limits /day/month etc

You're right, it's $3.95. I find the service good.
Authentication is by username and password, presumably from
anywhere.

I would have thought so. I'll think about this one, then. BTO works fine
for me now that I've switched over to it since finding out the news
yesterday, though I liked the portability of n.i.n. I don't use binarie
newsgroups- or at least hardly ever.

I'm already paying AOL £24.99 per month for access, but not getting any.
Whatever else I pay will be on top of that.

Consider switching to a similarly priced operator which offers newsgroup

I have but AOL just promised to double my download speed at no extra charge.
Since I download a lot of huge files, that is more important to me than
newsgrouip access. Also I heard there are limitations to newsgroup access
with other popular ISP's so it could be a case of out of the frying pan and
into the fire. There is an NTL cable running past my back door and several
of the neighbours are already hooked-up but the NTL rep refuses to give me a
definite quote for the services I require. He just says it will be X-amount
per month plus whatever other charges are incurred. At least with AOL I know
exactly how much I'm paying and for what.

So have a lot of ISP's, AOL are not offering anything special, in fact they
offer less.

I've read it and I'm still not convinced. AOL's newsservers have been
playing up for some time and it was that which persuaded me to sign-up for
NIN long before AOL's announcement.

That's because BT don't charge them extra any more. Other ISPs will
follow (mine did this before Christmas; reduced the cost too, although
there is a soft daytime cap; but that would have come anyway).

The free trial is limited to 1.5Gig. The file I'm downloading at present is
4.7Gig and that is typical.
